Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Some housekeeping Students should arrive in time for the start of a lecture as late arrival is extremely disruptive to other students. The use of mobile phones to take or make calls, to send or receive text messages, or to record or send images is forbidden in lectures. Special permission may be requested in exceptional circumstances. Taping of lectures should only take place with the agreement of the lecturer. Use the forum on moodle as I will post answers to questions there. See for example the paragraph below: Protein-rich fluid moves into the extravascular tissues. This causes the red cells in the flowing blood to become more concentrated, causing small vessels to packed with red blood cells, a process called stasis. 2- The figures are there to help and facilitate concepts but they also contain important information (see for instance the figures on the right). Watch out as they may be part of your assessment. Also, they might be an excellent way for you to summarise complex questions with multiple queries. 3- The text in bold blue refers to ‘extra materials’ that you might want to check for personal interest or to get a better mark! Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) At the end of the session you should have an understanding of: Why do we need the immune system and what is it for The different types of immune response What happen in absence of the immune system The future of Immunology Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Roadmap of the lectures 1. Case study Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Case study Case studies provide you with ‘real life’ examples of why the topic of the lecture is important and a context that will help you understanding it. Skin patch test for allergy You do not need to learn what is written in the case study to pass the exam Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course 2. What is the problem? Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course What is the problem? In this section we will look at the features and characteristics of the disease or phenomenon we are exploring in the case study including signs and symptoms. Skin patch test for allergy The patient feels itchy in different parts of the body when she eats certain foods. She also shows skin rushes when she touches certain types of fruits. You do not need to learn what is written in the case study to pass the exam Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course 3. Solution to the problem Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Solution to the problem In this section we will look at the ways the body (and the immune system) is trying to deal with the problem and see if we can intervene. Skin patch test for allergy The patient should avoid food with peanuts and/or strawberries by paying attention to the label on the food she eats. You do not need to learn what is written in the case study to pass the exam Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course 4. Physiology and pathology Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Physiology and pathology In this section we will dive into the immunological mechanisms behind the case studies. We will look at the cells and mediators of the immune response. Skin patch test for allergy You do not need to learn what is written in the case study to pass the exam Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course 5. Therapies and treatments Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Therapies and treatments In this section we might (or not) explore what are the treatments or precautions the patient needs to take to avoid the problem Skin patch test for The patient should allergy avoid food with peanuts and/or strawberries by paying attention to the label on the food she eats. You do not need to learn what is written in the case study to pass the exam Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course 6. Unmet needs Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Unmet needs In this section we will explore what current research is doing to solve problems related to the case study with no solution. Skin patch test for allergy Some patients might be ‘resistant’ to treatments and there might be no alternative cure for them. You do not need to learn what is written in the case study to pass the exam Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course 7. The future ahead Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course The future ahead This section will summarize what are the current new therapies or approach to modulate the immune response as well as the new findings in the filed that have influenced our understanding of the immune system. Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Q&A Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y Department of Life Science Immunology Course Lecture 1 – Introduction to the course Assessment 1-Autumn Class Test (50%) - Date of the test: Check on Moodle MCQ and True/False (90 min) on the topics covered during the autumn term. 2- Spring Class Test (50%) - Date of the test: Check on Moodle MCQ and True/False (90 min) on the topics covered during the spring term. All components of assessment have to be attempted and the average mark of 40% and above will be taken as pass. If the average mark is less than 40, the student will be asked to resit the part of the assessment that he/she failed i.e. either the coursework or the class test. Fulvio D’Acquisto BSS020N232Y
