Materials Handling Handling and Storing of Materials A. Purpose (1) Safety procedures contained herein shall be used as a guide for storing and handling of materials. B. General Safety Guidelines (1) Floors shall be kept clean and free of any slippery materials/substances in accordance with General Housekeeping procedures. (2) Good housekeeping should be maintained at all times. Combustible waste materials should not be permitted to accumulate in quantity or location that will constitute a hazard. (3) Storage areas and stairs shall be provided with adequate lighting. C. Fire Protection and Prevention (1) Smoking shall not be allowed in storage areas. (2) Cutting, welding or other use of open flames or spark - producing equipment shall not be permitted in the storage area unless a welding permit is issued in accordance with Welding and Cutting Operations procedures. (3) Fire lanes shall be provided to separate large stocks and for access to effective firefighting operations and shall not be less than 2.4 m (8 ft.) in the clear. Fire lanes shall never be obstructed. (4) Portable fire extinguisher shall be provided in accordance with Fire Extinguisher for Ground Operations procedures. (5) Combustible packing materials, such as carton boxes and paper shall not be allowed to accumulate. (6) Combustible packing materials, such as excelsior, shredded paper, styrofoam, shall be stored in fire-resistant bins, equipped with self-closing lids. To reduce the fire hazard, only a minimum of combustible packing materials shall be kept on hand. (7) Access to fire extinguishers, fire hoses, fire alarms, fire exits and electrical switches shall be kept clear. (8) Stacks shall be arranged to permit immediate access to all storage areas in case of fire. D. Storage (1) In storing materials, care shall be exercised to see that materials are stacked or piled so that it will not fall. Leaning or unbalanced stacks shall be restacked immediately to prevent their falling. (2) Protrusion of stored materials from storage racks shall not be allowed.
