AAU Morning Sickness: Simple nausea and vomiting with no complications or adverse outcome. In 70 to 80 % of pregnant ladies Not confined to first trimester Not confined to morning Usually mild and self limiting Hyperemesis Gravidarum Severe intractable form of nausea and vomiting In 0.3 to 2 % of pregnant women Hyperemesis gravidarum It affects: Fluids and electrolytes balance Nutrition intake and metabolism It may cause: Physical & psychological debilitation Adverse pregnancy outcome Hyperemesis gravidarum Adverse pregnancy outcome: Preterm labour Low birth weight Wernick's encephalopathy Diagnosis and investigations Diagnosed by excluding other Common causes of nausea and vomiting e.g. Malaria Investigations: CBC Blood urea and electrolytes US: to diagnose or exclude Molar pregnancy or multiple pregnancy and for pregnancy dating Hyperemesis gravidarum Treatment Fluid replacement ( Normal saline) Anti emetics Thiamine ( vit.
