The Triple Entente - France, Great Britain and Russia The Triple Alliance - Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy Creeping Barrage - A tactic used by the Triple Entente forces in order to push their soldiers forward safely Trench Warfare - Soldiers would dig “trenches” into the dirt ground so as they would shoot other soldiers they weren't visible Tunneling - Was used in trench warfare to dig beneath the enemies trenches to lay large explosives M.A.I.N Militarism - The government investing into military forces or follow along with military life and their policies Alliances - Agreeing to work with and help other countries Imperialism - Nations can expand their territories by colonizing other places weather they are peaceful or violent Nationalism- Citizens of the country should be patriotic Archduke Franz Ferdinand His assassination in Sarajevo was the most immediate cause of World War I He presumed to heir the throne for Austria-Hungary BATTLES ★ Battle of Somme (1916) France and British forces worked together British guns bombarded German defenses on the Somme for a week before the infantry attacked It was one of the biggest battles, with over a million soldiers injured or killed. It weakened German forces and showed how tough and deadly the war had become Battle of Vimy Ridge Canadians vs Germans The four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together for the first time They attacked the ridged and captured it from the German army General Arthur Currie - commander of the Canadian Crops Battle of Passchendaele Involved the British, French, Canadians and Germans. The Canadians attacked and drove the Germans from the eastern side of Passchendaele Ridge before the campaign ended. The objective for the Triple Entente was to repel German forces back, and to reclaim lost territory in Belgium. Battle of Verdun The Battle of Verdun was brutal, long, France vs. Germany Germany wanted to weaken France, targeting the city of Verdun Prisoners of War (POWs) POWs are soldiers captured by the enemy during war They face harsh conditions and are often held in camps Artillery Weapons that have longer range and more power than firearms Were designed to destroy enemy guns, cut through barbed wire and blast men out of the trenches Poison Gas- Weapons using chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas to attack Christmas Truce The Christmas Truce was a brief ceasefire Soldiers from both sides exchanged gifts and played soccer together
