Located in the northern portion of the Philippine archipelago, It is the economic and political center of the nation, being home to the country's capital city, Manila is the Capital City Quezon City, the country's most populous city Quezon City is the fourth most populous city in the world. Quezon City is the 15th largest city in the world by land area Luzon (cont.) The name Luzon is thought to derive from lusong, a tagalog word referring to a particular kind of large wooden mortar used in dehusking rice. Luzon is roughly divided into four sections; Northern, Central and Southern Luzon, and the National Capital Region. Administrative Divisions The island is covered by 8 administrative regions, 38 provinces 74 cities (8 regions, 38 provinces and 74 cities). It is the least populous region in the Philippines, with a population less than that of the city of Manila. The region comprises six provinces: Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province. The regional center is the highly urbanized city of Baguio. The region was officially created on July 15, 1987, and covers most of the Cordillera Mountain Range of Luzon and is home to numerous ethnic peoples. The Nueva Vizcaya province has a majority of Igorot population, but was placed by the American colonial government in the Cagayan Valley Region instead during the early 20th century, so do Quirino. Administrative divisions CAR is politically subdivided into 6 provinces. It has 2 cities; the highly urbanized City of Baguio, and the component city of Tabuk. There are 1,176 barangays in the region. Geographically, the western half of Nueva Vizcaya is part of the main Cordilleras, while its eastern half is part of the Caraballos, the meeting point of the Cordilleras and the Sierra Madre. There have been moves to reunify Nueva Vizcaya with the Cordilleras, however, no such legislation has yet been introduced in Congress. Port of Access TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Banaue Rice Terraces Banaue The Banaue Rice Terraces are terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by the ancestors of the indigenous people. It is located approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. These are fed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces. It is said that if the steps were put end to end, it would encircle half of the globe. Locals up to this day still plant rice and vegetables on the terraces, Ben Cab Museum Benedicto Reyes Cabrera , better known as BenCab, is a Filipino painter and was awarded National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts in 2006. FESTIVALS AND EVENTS Panagbenga Festival (Baguio City, February) Panagbenga is an annual flower festival celebrated every February which takes place in Baguio City, Philippines. The term “Panagbenga” comes from a Kankanaey term meaning “season of blooming”. This festival reflects the history, traditions and values of Baguio and the Cordilleras. It lasts over a month long and flourishes through community spirit involvement. Strawberry Festival (Benguet , March) Every 23rd of March, the capital city of La Trinidad brings out the best of its produce – strawberries. As a tradition in many parts of the Philippines, the Strawberry Festival is a form of celebration and thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Ullalim Festival (Kalinga , February) The Ullalim is a cultural festival. It is the highlight of the founding anniversary of the province. The festival showcases the life of the Kalingas through sports, crafts, and indigenous food. Kawayan Festival (Abra , March) Celebrated every March to showcase the Bamboo as a major product of Abra. The region hosts four chartered cities of Cauayan, Ilagan, Santiago, and Tuguegarao. Most of the land area is situated in the valley between the Cordilleras and the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. The eponymous Cagayan River, the country's largest and longest, runs through the region and flows from the Caraballo Mountains and ends at Aparri. Travel time is approximately one hour. Smaller airports/airstrips served by charter services are in Palanan and Maconaeon, both are coastal towns of Isabela. SKYJET AIRLINE BATANES AIRPORT Port of Access By Sea: MV Ivatan Princess offers trips from Currimao, Ilocos Norte to Basco, Batanes and vice versa only every Wednesdays and Sundays. Travel fare is around P 1,200 and the trip takes about 18 hours. Port of Access By Land: Several bus companies offer regular bus and sleeper bus trips from Manila to Tuguegarao via Pan-Philippine Highway and passing through the other provinces in the region. The average travel time is 12 hours; hence, night trips are recommended. There are also passenger bus lines that plies directly to Tuguegarao from both Baguio (10-hour trip) and Vigan (nine-hour trip). TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Callao Cave, Cagayan Start your adventure with the majestic Callao Cave, located in Peñablanca. Explore its cavernous chambers adorned with impressive limestone formations, including the famous Chapel, which is bathed in natural light. Buntun Bridge, Tuguegarao City Marvel at the architectural marvel that is Buntun Bridge, the longest river bridge in the Philippines. Enjoy panoramic views of the Cagayan River and the cityscape as you cross this impressive structure. Basco Lighthouse Batanes Basco Lighthouse is one of the three active lighthouses suggested by Florencio Abad, a former Batanes Congressman. Sabtang and Mahatao are the two other lighthouses, and all of them are considered tourist attractions in the province. Honeymoon Island, Isabela Located in the town of Divilacan, Isabela, Honeymoon Island is the perfect destination for couples to experience a total wonderful escapade. Capisaan Cave System, Nueva Vizcaya Capisaan Cave in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya is full of magnificent stone formations which enchants tourists and locals alike. This is a heaven for spelunkers. FESTIVALS AND EVENTS Bangkarera Festival (Apari, May 10) Features an exciting race participated in by up to a hundred boats of different sizes and shapes, as thanksgiving to their patron saint, St. Peter Thelmo. Cabibi Festival (Lallo, August) Depicts the "cabibi" (clam) as an enduring major source of livelihood for those living along the banks of Cagayan River. Piat Sambali Festival(Piat Cagayan, June) In Piat, Cagayan, the colorful celebration is highlighted by street dancing, cultural shows and a beauty pageant. This festival commemorates the Christianization of the Ytawes region of Cagayan.
