REGIONS IN LUZON GTHPCGEO – PHILIPPINE CULTURE & TOURISM GEOGRAPHY At the end of the session, the students shall be able to: Identify the different regions in Luzon such as: Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, NCR, and CAR Enumerate the provinces in Luzon Island Region IV-A CALABARZON Province Capital Cavite Imus Laguna Santa Cruz Batangas Batangas City Rizal Antipolo Quezon Lucena CALABARZON Formally known as the Southern Tagalog Mainland The region comprises five provinces: Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, CALABARZON The region is the most populous region in the Philippines according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, having over 14.4 million inhabitants in 2020, and is also the country's second most densely populated after the National Capital Region. The region is situated southeast of Metro Manila, and is bordered by the Manila Bay to the west, Lamon Bay and the Bicol Region to the east, the Tayabas Bay and Sibuyan Sea to the south, and Central Luzon to the north. It is home to places like Mount Makiling near Los Baños, Laguna, and the Taal Volcano in Batangas. Administrative divisions CALABARZON comprises five provinces, 1 highly urbanized city, 20 component cities 4,019 barangays Cities Calabarzon has 21 cities (21 component cities and the highly urbanized city of Lucena) in total, making it the region with the most cities amongst the Luzon regions. Antipolo is the most populous city in the region, as well as the 6th most populous city of the whole Philippines, while Bacoor and San Pedro are the most densely populated cities in the whole region. A large section of CALABARZON is considered part of the Greater Manila Area; Batangas Ciy is the center of the Batangas metropolitan area. The region has a gross regional product of ₱1.65 trillion (at current prices), which accounts for 17% of the national GDP. On August 7, 2000, the municipality of Los Baños, Laguna, was declared as a "Special Science and Nature City of the Philippines through Presidential Proclamation No. 349 in recognition of its importance as a center for science and technology, being home to many prestigious educational, environmental and research institutions. This proclamation does not convert the municipality to a city or give it corporate powers that are accorded to other cities. Ports of Access By Sea: Batangas Seaport Terminal is a key gateway in the Philippines' Nautical Highway System, connecting the island of Luzon to several provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao region. It connects the province of Batangas to Oriental Mindoro, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Zamboanga peninsula. By Land: The provinces of CALABARZON Region is very accessible from Metro Manila and various parts of Luzon by land. Several bus companies offer daily trips to these provinces and also with different routes. Getting Around: Private van and car rentals are available to move around the region as well as public modes of transportation. One can take a bus to move from one province to the other, or a jeepney and tricycle to get around towns. TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Taal Volcano This used to be a very popular hiking spot where one can also ride a horse to reach the rim of the crater lake. However, the 2020 eruption destroyed the hiking trail and virtually the entire island, rendering it off-limits to any type of tourist visit. However, one can still get a good view of this geologic wonder from many vantage points surrounding the lake, and also from Tagaytay City in the neighboring province of Cavite. FESTIVAL AND EVENTS Parada ng Lechon (Balayan, Batangas, June 24) The world-famous “Parada ng Lechon” originated in the old thanksgiving custom of the working class in what used to be the poor and depressed area of the Kanluran district (western Poblacion) of Balayan, Batangas. Sumilang Festival(Silang, Cavite, Feb.1-3) Held in Silang, Cavite to celebrate the agricultural sector of the town. Gat Tayaw Tsinelas Festival Festival (Liliw Laguna, Apr 1st week) Done to celebrate and support the industry of the Footwear Capital of the Philippines. Pahiyas Festival (Quezon, May 15) It is the biggest and most colorful harvest festival in the Philippines that takes place annually to honour the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro Labrador. Most people head to Lucban to celebrate, as this is where Pahiyas originated. Higantes Festival(Rizal, Nov 22- 23 One of the biggest events that happen every year in the Philippines. It is held in honor of San Clemente, who is the patron saint of fishermen.
