Chapter 1 IT Fundamentals GFP 203 FOUNDATION COMPUTING I PREPARED BY MS. ROWAIDAH AL ABDULLAH Definition of Computer A computer is an electronic device. It can take data, process the date to deliver information. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH General Operations 1. Input. 2. Process. 3. Output. 4. Storage. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Computer Characteristics High speed. Accuracy. Reliability. Mass storage of information. Communication with other computers through network like internet. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Components of a computer PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Components of a computer Input devices. Central Processing Unit. Memory. Output devices. Storage devices. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Input devices Mouse. Keyboard. Touch pad. Pointing stick. Scanner. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH CPU Central Processing Unit performs all the calculations within the computer.CPU speed measured in MHz. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Memory: RAM:  Random Access Memory.  Temporary memory.  Information stored is vanished when the PC is off.  Measured in Mbytes, i.e 512 Mbytes PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Memory ROM:  Read Only Memory.  Permanent memory. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Unit of Information Bytes  One character takes up about one Byte.  One byte is equal to eight bits.  Bits means binary digit. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Output Devices Computer screen. Printer. Speaker. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Storage Devices Floppy Disks Compact Disks (CD) Hard Disk Digital versatile Disk (DVD) Flash Disk PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Comparing Types of Memory Storage Devices Sometimes storage is a trade off between speed, capacity, price and reliability. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Hardware Hardware: The physical components of the computer, any device you can touch it, you can see it in your computer Software: All the programs and applications that you have installed in your computer PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH TYPES OF SOFTWARE OPERATING SYSTEM SOFTWARE. APPLICATION SOFTWARE. Types of Software Operating System Software Software that enables the user to interface with the computer components and allocates different programs to excute operations. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Operating System Software Examples of Operating system software:  Windows XP  Windows Vista PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Software All the programs that we use to produce the output (information) Example Ms Word Ms Excel Ms Powerpoint Gmail LAN and WAN PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH LAN Local Area Network Networks that connect the computers and devices which are available in one place, single place, local area. Cables are used to connect the devices together PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH WAN Wide Area Network Network that connect the computers and devices which are far away Telephone lines, fibre-optic links, satellite are used to connect the devices together. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Health, Safety and Environment PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Health and Safety Ergonomics is the study of the physical relationships between humans and computers. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Health and Safety Good working environments: A good workspace – well ventilated which reduces overheating of the equipment Cables and power supply – Cables securely plugged into the sockets, neatly tied and no overloading. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Health issues 1-Eyestrain 2-headache 3 Backache 4 Neck pain 5Repetitive Strain Injury 6- Obesity PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Information Security PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH IT and Society Information Society – the present society we live in, a period characterised by instant worldwide communication. Enormous amount of information are constantly converted into binary digits and transmitted over global networks. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH IT and Society Access rights means restricting access to certain type of information according to the user using the computer. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Back up your Data! Have 2 or more copies, because if something happened to the original copy, still we have other copies. We need to have backup to prevent losing our files. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Copyright PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Copyright Computer Software cannot be copied because it is protected by the law. PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Freeware and Shareware Freeware Free copyrighted software You can download for free You can use it for free You can not copy it You can not sell it You cannot Modify it PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Freeware and Shareware Shareware Copyrighted software You can download it for free You can use it for free But for limited time or limited functions For the trial bases PREPAREDBYROWAIDAHAL-ABDULLAH Types of Computer Types of computers 1 Mainframe 2 Server 3 Desktop Computer 4 Tablet PCs 5 Laptops 6 Mobile Phone 7 PDA References Wempen, F., Hattersley, R., Millett, R., & Shoup, K.
