CHAPTER 3 GENDER ISSUES IN WORKPLACE DIVERSITY Presenters: BATO-ON, Faith U. SALAMAT, Rachel Ann H. LOREGA, Jhay Kevin D. VALENCIA, Kevin G. AT THE END OF THIS CHAPTER, EVERYONE SHALL BE ABLE TO: Know the factors affecting gender inequality in the workplace Know the aim of gender equality in the workplace Know the different roles of women in the society INTRODUCTION The issue of discrimination at work is commonplace in most parts of the world. This often comes when women are considered part of today’s workforce. This is a sea change that has taken place worldwide seen from images in the media and women's activities today. This chapter addresses the gender issue by paying particular attention to women in business. Women were submissive in the initial part of modern history confronted with minimized roles and influence at work. This changed with time and women are now at the forefront of organizations; a few having leading roles to play in business. Faith Bato-on image reference: https://images.app.goo.gl/jqLxNBg6rg3rDxu37 WHAT IS GENDER? According to the World Health Organization, gender refers to the socially built traits of men, women, girls, and boys. This covers the responsibilities, customs, and behaviors of being a girl, boy, woman, or man, as well as social relationships. The socially constructed roles, behaviors, expressions, and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and people of different gender identities are also referred to as gender. It affects how individuals act and interact, how they view themselves and one another, and how power and resources are distributed in society (Canadian Institutes of Health Research, 2023). Faith Bato-on WHAT IS GENDER INEQUALITY? According to Plan International, gender inequality occurs when men, women, boys, girls, and people of other gender identities do not all have equal access to rights, resources, and opportunities. Also, women and girls comprise half of the world's population resulting in half of its potential. However, societal progress has been hindered by gender inequality, which persists worldwide (Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations). Ownership inequality Household inequality Faith Bato-on EMPLOYMENT INEQUALITY AT WORKPLACE Gender discrimination in the workplace can take many forms, but in general, it occurs when an employee or job applicant is treated differently or less favorably because of their sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation. While the terms "sex" and "gender" have different meanings, laws against workplace discrimination frequently use them interchangeably. Faith Bato-on FACTORS IN WORKPLACE INEQUALITY Unequal Pay Sexual Harassment Gender Stereotype Job Segregation Gender Bias Faith Bato-on FACTORS IN WORKPLACE INEQUALITY UNEQUAL PAY Unequal pay and compensation can be ascribed to various issues, including workplace discrimination in terms of promotions raises; underrepresentation of women in high-paying industries and leadership roles, and disparities in perks such as bonuses, pensions, and stock options. Addressing the gender wage gap needs coordinated efforts from organizational structures, labor force policies, and affirmative action to ensure that firms provide equitable compensation for all employees, regardless of gender. Jhay Kevin Lorega FACTORS IN WORKPLACE INEQUALITY SEXUAL HARASSMENT It is a criminal offense to harass a person (whether an applicant or an employee) based on their sex. Harassment may include "sexual harassment," unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. The harasser could be the victim's boss, a supervisor from another department, a co-worker, or even someone outside the organization, such as a client or customer. Jhay Kevin Lorega FACTORS IN WORKPLACE INEQUALITY GENDER STEREOTYPE A gender stereotype is a generalized assumption about a person’s characteristics that reinforces sexism. For women of color, racial stereotypes compound gender stereotypes, often leading to microaggressions in the workplace. Gender stereotyping involves assigning specific attributes, characteristics, or roles to an individual woman or man solely based on their membership in the social group of women or men. Gender stereotyping becomes harmful when it leads to violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Jhay Kevin Lorega FACTORS IN WORKPLACE INEQUALITY JOB SEGREGATION One of the factors contributing to gender inequality in the workplace is job segregation, which is the segmentation of jobs according to gender. In many societies, it is widely held that men are better suited for specific roles. This idea limits both men's and women's career options and maintains gender-based workplace segregation. These social norms constrain wages, distort labor markets, and hinder corporate productivity and innovation. Jhay Kevin Lorega FACTORS IN WORKPLACE INEQUALITY GENDER BIAS Gender bias in the workplace continues to hinder women’s success. While women have made significant strides in advancing gender equity, substantial gaps remain. One consequence of this "women's work" bias is that skilled women often face stricter qualification expectations than their male peers. As a result, women often need to significantly outperform their male colleagues to achieve the same opportunities for advancement, rather than simply meeting standard qualifications. Jhay Kevin Lorega WHAT IS GENDER EQUALITY? Gender equality is, first and foremost, a human right. It implies that women, men, boys, and girls of all classes and races participate as equals and have equal value. The UNICEF Data stated that gender equality means that women and men and girls and boys enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities, and protections. Investments in gender equality contribute to lifelong positive outcomes for children and their communities and yield considerable inter- generational payoffs, as children’s rights and well- being often depend on the rights and well-being of women. Kevin Valencia GENDER EQUALITY Gender equality means achieving equal outcomes for men and women, ensuring both genders have equal access to goods, opportunities, resources, and rewards. GENDER EQUITY Gender equity is the process of ensuring fairness to women and men by addressing their respective needs and eliminating barriers that prevent equal opportunities. A woman makes a family, a family makes a home, and a home makes a society. We should never think that a society would come into existence without the contribution of women. A good, healthy society does not automatically emerge on its own and stand firm; it needs to emerge, and for its emergence, women play a pivotal role. From behavioral to health education, women have their hands in everything. These are the basic fundamentals of a good society, and women are the main contributors in building up a strong society. Kevin Valencia ROLES IN SOCIETY Women are an essential part of society and should not be overlooked due to their perceived lack of power and authority. They are companions to men, and men should work alongside them with mutual support throughout life. Gicki (2013) highlights that women play vital roles as mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives, contributing significantly to building a healthy and strong society. However, despite societal progress, many women continue to face challenges and limitations. Kevin Valencia ROLES IN SOCIETY People have been socialized to expect men to be brave, industrious, and domineering, whereas women have been expected to be submissive, timid, and nurturing. Nowadays, however, women do not have to rely on their husbands to provide financial support for the home, and in many cases, they become breadwinners and head of the home themselves. Thus, these changes have empowered both men and women, promoting a more equal and collaborative society.
