**[Script for Finals EDUC 7018 CIP]** **SCENE NO.1: Introduction to Speech Act** **\*Cue in the PowerPoint background as a primer** **- First slide will be shown on the Zoom (screen)** \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ **[NARRATION TO SCENE 1: INTRODUCTION TO SPEECH ACT]** **Presenter:** Have you ever thought about the complexities of communication? **Presenter:** Say for example, the way we say things may it be in a verbal or non-verbal way such as commanding someone and our facial expressions. **Presenter:** Well! It is about Speech Act. A speech act is an action rather than means to **express, convey, and communicate**. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **(Flash to the screen the slide no. 2 and highlight the words "express, convey, communicate" match the timing of the words to your narration)** \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **Presenter:** Also to note there is a saying that goes, "A theory of language is a theory of action" -- Greig E. Henderson and Christopher Brown **Presenter:** Why? Language itself is meaningless without successfully conveying what you intend to say and that, students, would fall into these three types of speech act. **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*End of Scene No. 1\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** **\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_** **[NARRATION TO SCENE 2: TYPES OF SPEECH ACT]** **\*Cue in the slide no. 3** **Presenter:** The three types of Speech Act are the following: Locution, Illocution, and Perlocution. These three types further describe the different purposes of communication and of course what they convey. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **(Flash to the screen slides no. 4,5, and 6 - edit the video and pop up the boxes in an orderly fashion -- these will solidify the lesson, and also provide examples for each Speech act)** \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **Presenter:** Our words and what we say or the sound, words, semantics, and syntax is locution. It helps us in producing the actual utterance which is usually a declarative sentence. **(Insert an example of a locutionary act -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter:** And for the illocutionary act it is the intended purpose of the utterance, which is simply the effect of saying the locution. **(Insert and example of an illocutionary act -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter:** Last would be the Perlocutionary Act. This is the effect of the utterance---the product of saying the locution---a consequence of saying something. After the person communicates, the listener is compelled to do something, and this response is the Perlocutionary act. (Insert and example of an perlocutionary act -- a photo/short video of it in the screen) **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*End of Scene No. 2\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ **[NARRATION TO SCENE 3: CLASSIFICATION OF SPEECH ACTS]** **\*Cue in slide no. 8** **Presenter:** Good! So now we can identify the three types of Speech Act. On the other hand, let us determine further the classification of Speech Acts. **Presenter:** First of the classification would be the Representatives. It is about the observation of certain things then followed by stating the fact or opinion based on the observation. From that definition, you can say it is a sentence that simply observes, represents, and states a given fact. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **(Flash to the screen slide no. 9)** \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **(Insert an example of Representatives -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter:** She is gorgeous. From that sentence, students -- what do you understand and infer about it? **(Pause for a while before the answer)** **Presenter:** Yes, it is about denoting and describing one's appearance, which says that she is gorgeous which means she is pretty. **Presenter:** Moving on the next is Directives. Directives is commanding someone, or directing a person to do something. **(Insert an example of Directives -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter:** Get ¼ sheet of paper. The word "get" means the person is commanding the listener to get a ¼ sheet of paper, usually said by a teacher to their students before taking an exam. **(Pause for a while before proceeding to the next Classification of Speech Act)** **Presenter:** The third one is the Commissives. Commissives constitute a statement that commits the speaker to some future course of action -- a pledge, promise, and commitment. **(Insert an example of Commissives -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter:** The sentence: "I will follow your instructions." means that the speaker is promising that they will follow the instructions. **(Pause for a while before proceeding to the next Classification of Speech Act)** **Presenter:** Fourth is the Expressives. Expressives express a psychological state, from the word itself "express" conveying the speaker's expression. This is used to show and express different emotions such as happiness, appreciation, gratitude, sadness, joy, disgust, anger, contentment, and many other varied emotions and reactions. **(Insert an example of Expressives -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter: "**Thank you for being there for me." This is a sentence that expresses gratitude to the listener. The words "Thank you" lets the speaker know that they are grateful for the person's support and friendship towards them. **(Pause for a while before proceeding to the next Classification of Speech Act)** **Presenter:** Lastly, we have Declaratives. Declaratives effect immediate changes. The word "declare" is used to assert something. Logically speaking after declaring something, it will lead to immediate changes and results. **(Insert an example of Declaratives -- a photo/short video of it in the screen)** **Presenter:** The sentence: "You are dismissed." declares to the person and or listener to leave. A senior officer can also note this as an informal command to the person they have fulfilled their duties. **(Pause for a while before proceeding to the conclusion)** **Presenter:** Speech Act is complex yet simple to understand. It is very evident in our everyday lives. Now that we have learned about it, we can use communication effectively in relating well with others, expressing our desires, connecting with others, and most especially making valuable impact to our community. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-- **(Flash to the screen the end background)** \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\--
