Course Overview for Fall 2024 Objectives/Rationale NG102(EnglishCompositionI)aimstoenhancetheexistinglanguageskillsofthestudentsat E the advanced level where theyareexpectedtobecompetentlanguageusers,withtheabilityto organize and express thoughts using logical reasoning and reflect the skills of analyzing and synthesizing opinions and ideas. The course particularly focuses on developing Written Communication through Critical Thinking and Global Thinking skills. Course Aims and Outcomes lthough this course specifically focuses on the writing component, it, however,integratesall A four language skills. It highlights reading and writing aspects of the English language for academic purposes while simultaneously exposing learners to speaking and listening skills throughonlinediscussions,presentationsandcollaborativeassignments.Studentsareexpectedto attain skills in reading comprehension, drawing inferences, practicing rhetorical strategies, creating compositions, synthesizing, critical thinking, and global thinking. Specific Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, successful students will be able to: d emonstrate effective communicative strategies and skills exhibit comprehension by rewriting information employ rhetorical strategies of persuasion employ research methods evaluate texts using critical reading skills and inferencetechnique construct logical and structured written and oral discourse synthesize and integrate information from sources avoiding plagiarism author academic paper, communicating original concepts learn to critically read both fiction and nonfiction, analyze and extract themes and concepts, and apply these to real-world situations. Format and Procedure Activities will include: introducing different genres of communication through active learning process intensive and extensive reading: reading and analyzing different types of texts incorporating the techniques used in diverse readings into students’ own writing assignments speaking activities and assessments consultations: need-based (writing-focused) collaborative writing assessments and presentations computer-generated quizzes peer work & self-evaluation: reviewing peer work, assessing own performance using rubrics and following teachers’ feedback Fall 2024 4 Course Requirement Participation policy 1. Regular and effective participation is highly recommended. Students of Dhaka sections must attend at least 70% of the classes. Students of Residential Semester (RS) must attend at least 90% of the classes. tudents must take part in all the activities - reading/writing/speaking, asinstructedby S the faculty. 2. Tutorial sessions should be attended on time. 3. Completion of weekly tasks is mandatory. 4. S ubmission dates for activities (worksheets/quizzes/exams) will be announced in advance.Studentsareexpectedtomaintainalldeadlines.Studentsshouldregularlycheck announcements/updates in BuX and Slack workspace. 5. It is mandatory for students to participate in discussions initiated by the course teacher. 6. B RACUPOLICYFORFINALEXAMS/ASSESSMENTS:Studentswhoattendfinal exams but are unable to complete them foranyreasonareassignedafailinggrade(F). These students are not allowed to complete the exam at another time or appeal for a make-upexam.Studentswhodonottaketheirfinalexamsanddonotwithdrawordrop from courses are also assigned a failing grade for final exams. Academic Integrity E achstudentinthiscourseisexpectedtoabidebytheBRACUniversityCodeofAcademic Integrity. Any work submitted by a student in this course for academic credit must be the student’s own work. Studentsareencouragedtostudytogetherandtodiscussinformationandconceptscoveredin thecoursewithotherstudents.Studentscancollaboratewitheachothertogive“consulting” help to or receive “consulting” help from other students with permission from theteacher. However,thispermissiblecooperationshouldneverinvolveonestudenthavingpossessionof a copy of all or part of the work done by someone else, intheformofanemail,anemail attachment file, a diskette, or hard copy. Should copying occur, the student who copied work from another student and the student who gave material to be copied, will both automatically receive azerofortheassignment. Penalty for violation of this Code canalsobeextendedtoincludefailureofthecourseand university disciplinary action. Duringexaminations/assessments,studentsmustdotheirownwork.Sharingisnotpermitted duringtheexaminations,normayastudentcomparepapers,copyfromothers,orcollaborate in any way. Anycollaborativebehaviourduringtheexaminations/assessmentswillresultin failure of the exam, and may lead to failure of the course and university disciplinary action. Plagiarism–theuseofmaterialsproducedbyotherswithoutacknowledgingthesource–isa serious academic offense. Teachers will provide guidelines for citing different types of sources and the students are required to follow them throughout the course.Ifastudent’s paper is found with plagiarized information, he/she will be penalized with an “F” grade. G rammarandspellingmatter.Whileusinginformalandabbreviatedlanguageiscommon intextmessagesandonotheronlineplatforms,keepinmindthatdoingsoisnotacceptable in an academic setting. Apply the techniques taught in class to maintain a proper writing style. 4. C ite your sources. It is essential to cite sources when youborrowideasfromsomewhere. This should be maintained not only in assignments but also inonlinediscussionforumsto increase the reliability of the ideas that are shared. 5. P osting inappropriate material, bullying, grouping, and aggressive/hostile behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Anyone found guiltyofdoingsowillbe penalized. 6.
