- It highlights reading and writing aspects of the English language used for academic purposes.
- Learners are exposed to speaking and listening skills through online discussions, presentations, and collaborative assignments.
- Students are expected to attain skills in reading comprehension, drawing inferences, practicing rhetorical strategies, creating compositions, synthesizing, critical thinking, and global thinking.
Specific Learning Outcomes
- Successful students will demonstrate effective communicative strategies and skills.
- They will exhibit comprehension by rewriting information.
- Students will employ rhetorical strategies of persuasion.
- They will also employ research methods.
- Students will be able to evaluate texts using critical reading skills and inference techniques.
- They will be able to construct logical and structured written and oral discourse.
- Students will be able to synthesize and integrate information from sources avoiding plagiarism and author academic papers, communicating original concepts.
- Students will learn to critically read both fiction and nonfiction, analyze and extract themes and concepts, and apply these to real-world situations.
Format and Procedure
- The course will include a variety of activities:
- Introducing different genres of communication through an active learning process.
- Intensive and extensive reading: reading and analyzing different types of texts.
- Incorporating techniques used in diverse readings into students' own writing assignments.
- Speaking activities and assessments.
- Consultations: need-based (writing-focused).
- Collaborative writing assessments and presentations.
- Computer-generated quizzes.
- Peer work & self-evaluation: reviewing peer work, assessing own performance using rubrics and following teachers’ feedback.
Course Requirements
- Regular and effective participation is highly recommended.
- Dhaka section students must attend at least 70% of the classes.
- Residential Semester (RS) students must attend at least 90% of the classes.
- Students must participate in all activities - reading/writing/speaking, as instructed by the faculty.
- Tutorial sessions should be attended on time.
- Weekly tasks are mandatory.
- Submission dates for activities (worksheets/quizzes/exams) will be announced in advance.
- Students are expected to maintain all deadlines and regularly check announcements/updates in BuX and Slack workspace.
- It is mandatory for students to participate in discussions initiated by the course teacher.
- Students who attend final exams but are unable to complete them for any reason are assigned a failing grade (F).
- These students are not allowed to complete the exam at another time or appeal for a make-up exam.
- Students who do not take their final exams and do not withdraw or drop from courses are also assigned a failing grade for final exams.
Academic Integrity
- Students are expected to abide by the BRAC University Code of Academic Integrity.
- All work submitted by a student for academic credit must be the student’s own work.
- Students are encouraged to study together and discuss information and concepts covered in the course with other students.
- Students can collaborate on assignments with permission from the teacher.
- This permissible cooperation should never involve one student having possession of a copy of all or part of the work done by someone else, in any form.
- If copying occurs, both the student who copied work from another student and the student who gave material to be copied will automatically receive a zero for the assignment.
- Penalty for violation of the Code can also extend to include failure of the course and university disciplinary action.
- During examinations/assessments, students must do their own work. Sharing is not permitted during the examinations, nor may a student compare papers, copy from others, or collaborate in any way.
- Any collaborative behavior during the examinations/assessments will result in a failing grade for the exam, and may lead to failure of the course and university disciplinary action.
- Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Teachers will provide guidelines for citing different types of sources and students are required to follow them throughout the course. If a student’s paper is found with plagiarized information, the student will be penalized with an “F” grade.
Inclusivity Statement
- This course emphasizes learner-centered teaching, which fosters student autonomy, promotes students’ sense of responsibility, supports students’ decision-making in the learning process, and focuses on student-participation rather than teacher-participation.
- The course incorporates critical thinking, integrating the skills to analyze, evaluate, investigate, and think critically using own evaluative skills and explore new ideas and points of view.
- It encourages idea generation, not memorization, and develops all four skills of language in academic form.
- Collaborative learning is promoted through student engagement, encouraging students to build their own knowledge and initiating collaborative group work.
- This includes employing peer review techniques, applying inductive methods, including alternative assessments, and ensuring task-based learning.
- The course ensures a positive learning environment through constructive feedback to reinforce analytical thinking, guarantees students’ comfort in taking risks, and incorporates a flexible syllabus.
- Teachers and students are encouraged to reflect on their online participation daily and weekly with colleagues in module meetings. Students are also encouraged to reflect on pre and post activities.
Guidelines for Interaction Online (where applicable)
- Be respectful: Refrain from using language that could hurt or disrespect people you interact with online. Be open to diversity and create an inclusive online community where you treat one another with respect and compassion.
- Avoid ambiguity and ‘all-caps’: Write your posts and comments to other students in a coherent and unambiguous manner to facilitate effective communication. Be careful of writing in all capital letters, which is considered shouting and may lead to misunderstandings
- Grammar and spelling matter: While using informal and abbreviated language is common in text messages and on other online platforms, keep in mind that it is not acceptable in an academic setting.
- Cite your sources: It is essential to cite sources when you borrow ideas from somewhere, both in assignments and in online discussion forums.
- Posting inappropriate material, bullying, grouping, and aggressive/hostile behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Anyone found guilty of doing so will be penalized.
- Taking screenshots or recordings without permission, as well as sharing course content and comments from any discussion forums, is strictly prohibited. You may save learning materials, but do not share them on social media.
