The last sentence of an introduction is the thesis statement. Like the topic sentence of a paragraph, a thesis statement names the specific topic of the essay. The body consists of one or more paragraphs. Each paragraph develops a subdivision of the topic. The conclusion, like the concluding sentence The lntroductory Paragraph The introductory paragraph, or introduction, is the first paragraph of an essay. It has two functions: ( 1) It attracts the reader's interest, and (2) it introduces the topic of the essay. There are several kinds of introductory paragraphs. you will learn to write a kind known as a "funnel" introduction. A funnel introduction has two parts: several general statements and one thesis statement. The general statements give the reader background information about the topic of the essay. They should lead your reader gradually from a very general idea of your topic to a very specific idea. The first general statement in a funnel introduction just introduces the topic. It is usually the first opening sentence in introductory paragraphs. A hook can be more than one sentence. How does a hook grab attention? By presenting a surprising fact By quoting someone famous By giving a shocking statistics By asking the reader questions that require some answer By asking rhetorical questions that may not necessarily require an answer Surprising Facts: The three wealthiest families in the world have more assets than the combined wealth of the forty- eight poorest nations. Can you think of a topic where this hook could be useful? As many as 34% of dogs are overweight or obese. Can you think of a topic where this hook could be used? Powerful sayings of famous people: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the Shocking Statistics: Only 2% of kids in the U.S. eat healthy. Can you think of a topic where this hook could be useful? More than 1 million species have become extinct due to disappearing habitats, ecosystems, and acidic oceans-all caused due to global warming. Asking the reader questions that require answers: Can you go back and think about your childhood fantasies of becoming famous? Asking the reader rhetorical questions: These are questions which the reader is not expected to answer; these are ‘alarming’ questions that give the reader ‘food for thought’. Can you imagine a world without water? Would life be the same without the Internet? Can you think of similar rhetorical questions Anecdotal Hook When a writer uses a short story to relate to the topic and gain the reader’s attention, they are using an anecdote. This story can be a short, personal story or one that is a figment of your imagination. Make sure that it relates to the main idea of the paper. Show the relevance that it has to the topic of the paper. In all cases, the hook makes readers want to Tips to writing an effective hook Read, read, and reread the prompt before writing the hook. Question: Should people be banned from using their private vehicles? Statement: Banning people from using their personal vehicles plays an important role in solving the problem of traffic congestion. Which form is more effective in this case? Why? what is a thesis statement? The thesis statement is the sentence that tells the main idea of the whole essay. It can be compared to a topic sentence, which gives the main idea of a paragraph. It usually comes at or near the end of the introductory paragraph. It has three purposes: 1. It states the specific topic of the essay. 2. It may list the subtopics of the main topic. 3. It may also mention the method of organization.
