Summary
This lesson covers unifying themes in the study of life, including learning competencies, objectives, and a review of introductory biology. It discusses topics such as levels of organization, flow of energy, evolution, adaptation, interacting systems, structure and function, reproduction, regulation, interaction with the environment, and biology and society. The document is a presentation of notes, suitable for high school education.

Lesson 2: Unifying themes in Study of Life Learning Competencies The learners will be able to: describe how unifying themes (e.g., structure and function, evolution, and ecosystems) in the study of life show the connections among living things and how they interact with each other and with their environment (S11/12LT-IIa-3) Objectives: After going through this lesson, learners are expected to: 1. name the unifying themes in the study of life; 2. describe the unifying themes illustrated; 3. explain the connection among living things and their interaction with the environment; 4. give details on how these themes serve as the foundation in the study of biology; and 5. value life by taking good care of all beings, human, plants and animals. Review Introduction to Biology by Frank Gregorio It is usually easy to recognize life, but it is often much harder to define it. Life Sciences Plants, animals, human beings, and microscopic organisms Life Science vs. Biology All living organisms are made up of cells. Levels of Organization 2.) Flow of Energy (Energy and Life) 3.) Evolution 4.) Adaptation 5.) Interacting System 6.) Structure and Functions 7.) Reproduction and Inheritance 8.) Regulation 9.) Interaction with Environment 10.) Biology and Society Levels of Organization There is a hierarchy of increasing complexity within cells, from molecular level of DNA (where the chemistry of life occurs), to the organelle level ( where the cellular activities are organized) , to the cellular level ( the smallest level of organization) Flow of Energy ( Energy & Life) Energy is used by organisms to grow and do work. The flow of energy among organisms helps determine how organisms interact within their environment Evolution The theory of evolution helps explain how all kinds of organisms came into existence. It explains why organisms look the way they do, and how organisms of the past are related to the organisms alive today. The theory of evolution by Natural Selection Proposed by Charles Darwin which presumes that organisms with more favorable traits would more likely to survive and reproduce in a certain environment. Adaptation Change in the species over generations in order to better survive in the environment Adaptation Change in the species over generations in order to better survive in the environment Interacting System Living things interact with each other and with the environment. A living community is highly structured and interdependent. The interdependence is the result of a long process of evolution in which selection has favored cooperation. Structure and Function A relationships exists between structure and function at all biological organization. Organisms structure fits with its function Tendrils “Echolocation” Reproduction & Inheritance Traits of parents are being passed from one generation to the next generation. Regulation Interaction with the Environment Biology and Society Biology and Society Knowledge from biological science can be applied to specific problems in the society to improve human life.
