CHANGE PROCESSES Ella Mae A. Kitane Sept. 3, 2024 LIST OFCONTENT Categories Elements Kurt Lewin’s of of Theory curriculum curriculum change change OBJECTIVES Explain the force field theory as well as the categories and elements of change processes. Collaborate in a group to explore curriculum change issues. Determine the importance of curriculum change. KURT LEWIN’S FORCE FIELD THEORY WHO IS KURT LEWIN ? Father of special psychology Explains the process of change FORCE FIELD THEORY The education landscape has two opposing forces. The driving force and the restraining force. If both forces are equal no change will happen. If the driving force overpowers the restraining force change will occur. If the restraining force is stronger than the driving force, there will be no changes. FORCE FIELD THEORY ILLUSTRATION FORCE FIELD THEORY ILLUSTRATION CATEGORIES OF CURRICULUM CHANGE McNeil in 1990 categorized curriculum change as follows: Substitution The current curriculum will be replaced or substituted by a new one. Complete overhaul ex. - Changing an old book to entirely new one. - Changing the flow of the class. Alteration There is a minor change to the current or existing curriculum. ex. - Instead of using a graphing paper they can use a graphing calculator. - Using television instead of a projector. Restructuring There is a major change or modification in the school system, degree program or educational system. ex. - From K-12 curriculum to MATATAG curriculum. - Due to COVID-19 pandemic distance learning was used. Perturbations These are changes that are disruptive, but teachers have to adjust to them within a fairly short time. ex. - The class was suspended due to a heavy rain. - The teacher has to shorten schedule to accommodate unplanned extra curricular activities. Value orientation To McNeil, this is a type of curriculum change. Perhaps this classification will respond to shift in the emphasis that the teacher provides which are not within the mission or vision of the school or vice versa. ex. A teacher who forgot what is given emphasis by the school needs a curriculum value orientation. ELEMENTS OF CHANGE PROCESSES Developmental Curriculum implementation should develop multiple perspectives, increase integration and make learning autonomous, create a climate of openness and trust, and appreciate and affirm strengths of the teacher. To do so, their must be Orientation and preparation followed by refinement. Participatory Curriculum implementation should be participatory, specially because other stakeholders like peers, school leaders, parents and curriculum specialists are necessary. Supportive Supportive curriculum implementation is required in the process of change, such as support of supplies, equipment, conductive learning environment, and human support especially from school head or leader.
