It works well for linking from one continuous consonant to another continuous consonant. In the phrase "[this month]," the 's sound' /s/ blends smoothly into the 'm sound' /m/. Because the air flows continuously during continuous consonants (unlike stops and affricates, where the air is briefly completely blocked), linking from one continuous consonant to another continuous consonant requires briefly blending the consonant sounds while the vocal tract changes from the position of the first sound into the position of the second sound. Blending can also be used to link continuous consonants and vowel sounds. Just like in the phrase "[this afternoon]," where the /s/ of the word "this" is being shared between two words. Examples: Spelling Pronunciation ------------------ ------------------------------- My name is Ann. my nay mi zæn 909-5068 Nay now nayn fay vo sick seyt Did you like it? Didja like it? Coarticulation: Overlapping sounds ---------------------------------- Coarticulation occurs when adjacent sounds overlap one another, causing a change in one or bo5h sound's pronunciation. Coarticulation includes *nasal* and *lateral* *aspiration*. An example of a nasal aspiration happens in the phrase "[good news]" where the air is stopped as a d' sound but released as an 'n Lateral aspiration is similar in concept to nasal aspiration in that the air is stopped as a normal /d/, but released as a different sound as an 'l sound' /l/. In the phrase "[bad luck]," the /d/ links into the /l/ where the lateral aspiration happens. ![](media/image3.png) It is necessary to identify which group of words expresses a single idea because it will not sound natural to pause in the middle of a thought group. Examples: I will be placing the call on hold/ for a minute or two/ while checking on your account/ is that ok with you? // I felt so bad about what happen to your order/ but don't worry/ I will do the best that I can do to help you solve it. // II.
