# Eating Meat Hurts the Environment More than ever before, people are eating meat. It may be delicious, but it’s dangerous for our environment. The animals we eat - cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, and the like - release methane gas when they digest food. This is a big problem. These gasses, called greenhouse gasses, build up in the atmosphere and trap heat. This causes the average global temperature to rise over time. You may have heard of global warming. This is what people are referring to when they use that term. ## Reducing Methane Gasses People can reduce methane gasses by eating less meat. Grazing livestock raised for humans to eat are a large producer of these gas emissions. The United Nations released a report in 2006 that showed that livestock caused 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions every year. By reducing the amount of meat we eat, we can eventually help lower greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. ## A Herd of Cattle Livestock farms and companies have tried to say that eating a vegetarian diet is more likely to raise greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a silly claim. The facts remain that lowering the amount of meat that we eat will reduce greenhouse gasses, and therefore global warming. It’s the right thing to do for the environment. ## A Black and White Image of a Hamburger The image shows a hamburger on a white paper with the caption “It’s easy to swap out meat with vegetarian options”. The hamburger has a black sesame seed bun and a meat patty with lettuce and tomato inside.
