POLYMER FORMATION AND STRUCTURE POLYMER the word polymer is derived from the classical Greek words poly meaning “many” and meres meaning “parts.” is a large molecule consisting of chains of repeating units called MONOMERS (small building-block molecules). In a polymer, the monomers are linked to each other by covalent bonds. Polymers are the giant molecules of chemistry. Chemists also call them macro-molecules. One of the simplest synthetic polymers is polyethylene. The polyethylene monomer is ethene (also called ethylene). When ethene monomers react with each other, it breaks the double bond between carbons and bonds to form a long polymer chain. Formation There are two major types of' The chemical reaction by polymerization methods used to which the monomers are convert small molecules linked together to (monomers) into polymers. form polymers is called These methods were originally polymerization. referred to as addition and condensation polymerization.
