DEPRESSION IN ADOLESCENT BY LAWANDA JEFFERSON DESIREE LEWIS NIA THOMPSON TITLE PAGE SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING AT NORTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA NURG 5120 – THEORY ORIENTED NURSING PRACTICE DR. PAMELA B. SIMMONS, PHD, APRN, FNP-BC March 24,2023 Background and Significance Meaning in Published Works Purpose Definitions and Defining Attributes Model Related Contrary Antagonistic Case. According to Walker and Avant (2005), a contrary case is a model of what the concept is not. It is a case that is opposing or contradictory to the idea and would not have any essential attributes. Contrary claims do not enclose any of the critical characteristics of the concept. "Contrary cases that contribute to meaning reveal important aspects of the exemplar case that are hidden in expectations you may be making about the concept." (Chinn &Kramer, 2022,p. 147,). The concept in the story is adolescent depression. Tori is a15 year old high school student who is jubilant about school and her classes mates. She is delighted to spend family time with her mother, father, and two younger brothers, David who is 6 years old and Frank who is 10 years old. She is excited to babysit for her patient when they have a date night, which gives her time to play with her two younger brothers. Borderline Adaptation Case. A borderline case has more defining attributes. It is closely connected to the concept, but has some variation, making it characteristically distinguishable from the studied concept (Walker & Avant, 2011). A borderline case demonstrates the modifications in other ideas, though small ones, "A borderline case is found when the same word is used in a different context. "Slang terms and terms used to portray technologic operations or attributes are rich sources of borderline cases when they are first entering the language" (Chinn & Kramer, 2022, p. 147). Borderline Case The nurse at the local school noticed that over 65% of the adolescent grade had decreased, and the teachers reported that students were persistent and sad throughout the day and were unmotivated to do anything. They would not focus during lectures, so she met with the principal and arranged a two-day fun day that promoted mental health and prevented mental health conditions to help prevent self-harm Moreover, other risk behaviors, such as the harmful use of alcohol and drugs, harm young people's mental ̶ and physical ̶ health. She invited two mental health groups. Helping Adolescents Thrive (HAT) and WHO-UNICEF who has developed a module on Child and Adolescent Mental and Behavioral Disorders as part of the mhGAP Intervention Guide 2.0. (2022). She also invited mental health counselors and healthcare personnel to talk to students. She had food, games, balloons, and muscle. After a 2-month follow-up, students' grades improved, and they became motivated and energetically participating doing class. Invented Antecedents and Consequences Empirical Indicators Empirical Indicators According to Walker and Avant (2011), "empirical referents are not tools to measure the concept" but rather "how you can recognize or measure the defining characteristics or attributes" (p.168). Empirical referents provide the clinician with observable phenomena to measure eHealth in healthcare Patient Health Questionnaire-9: (PHQ-A) An instrument commonly used for screening and diagnosing and selecting and monitoring treatment. The PHQ-2, comprising the first two items of the PHQ-9, inquiries about the degree to which an individual has experienced depressed mood and anhedonia over the past two weeks. Its purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis or to monitor depression severity but rather to screen for depression. (Kroenke& Spitzer 2002). Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) A 4-question screening instrument, the Ask Suicide- Screening Questions (ASQ), with high sensitivity and negative predictive value, can identify the risk for suicide in patients presenting to pediatric emergency departments. The ASQ toolkit is organized by the medical setting in which it will be used. Operational Definition Operational Definition "the theoretic definition gives a general idea of the concept's empiric indicators, which are sometimes referred to as operational definition." Recently, childhood depression can be conceptualized as mood/symptoms, as a syndrome, and as a depressed mood or symptoms in children, which are emphasized in the present study, are concerned with emotional symptoms or feelings that include inappropriate and unrealistic feelings of sadness, worthlessness, emptiness, melancholy, hopelessness, unhappiness, or blue feelings that children experience for an indefinite period Regarding the depressive syndrome, state that it "... refers to a set of emotions and behaviors that have been found statistically to occur together in identifiable patterns at a rate that exceeds chance, without implying any DSM-5 outlines the following criterion to make a diagnosis of depression. A few indicators during this phase include: 1. Depression. 2. Diminished interest or pleasure 3. Weight loss 4. Slowing down and reduced physical movement. 5. Fatigue. Summary Reference Chinn, P.
