# Base Moves in Dance Aerobic dance consists of a repertoire of fundamental movements or base moves that involve the lower and upper body, as well as a combination of these for a full body workout routine. Music provides structure to the routine while also setting the mood. With each regular rhythmic pulse is a beat or a count. Beats are organized into a stronger, emphatic downbeat and a weaker upbeat. A series of downbeats and upbeats make up a measure. In aerobics, two measures (8-count phrase), four measures (16-count phrase), and eight measures (32-count phrase) are common. Base moves are a set of foundation movements that you can use, alter and play around depending on the level of the intensity you want for your dance fitness activity. These movements are divided into two categories: lower-body moves and upper body moves that can be set to two types of count: two-count moves and four-count moves, depending on the number of counts needed to complete the task.
