Collaboration Filter Bubbles A filter bubble is the intellectual isolation that can occur when websites make use of algorithms to selectively assume the information a user would want to see, and then give information to the user according to this assumption. - Techopedia Filter bubbles in popular social media and personalized search sites can determine the particular content seen by users, often without their direct consent or cognizance, due to the algorithms used to curate that content. - Wikipedia Is it dangerous? Protecting Intellectual Property (IP) Information is the result of a creative process Information can be owned Sometimes there are multiple forms of ownership The two types of intellectual property that we are interested in are: 1. Software products 2. Copyrights of material on the Web Software License Agreement Each software product might have their own terms and conditions. But in general this encompasses: Individual and Commercial Use Distribution Sharing or Copying (Microsoft, Apple, etc …) Open / Proprietary Licenses (Mozilla Firefox) Open Source Software – Proprietary Software: Private source code – Open Source Software: Software is publicly available – Open source seems not to make sense: Who pays for the technology? How can a company make money if the product is publicly available? Copyrights When a person writes a term paper, builds a Web page, or creates a sculpture – They own the copyright on that “work” Copyrights protects the owner’s right to do the following: – Make a copy of their work – Create a derivative work – Distribute or publish the work – Publicly perform / display the work Copyright on the Web Free Personal Use – You are free to read, view, or listen to it – You can mail the URL Fair Use – Limited use of copyrighted materials without permission is allowed – For example: – Use for educational purposes, – Review or criticism Public Domain – No Rights Reserved – Free for anyone to use, in any form. – Treat the information, as your own Creative Commons License Used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created Goal is to increase the sharing of intellectual property and to inspire greater creativity Allows people to copy and distribute it without the need of contacting the creator 4 Options available Creative Commons License Attribution: Allowed to copy, distribute, perform, remix, etc., as well as create other work, as long as credit is given Noncommercial: Allowed to copy, distribute, perform, remix, etc., as well as create other work based, as long as the result is not for sale No Derivative Work: Allowed to copy, distribute, perform, etc., as long as those are verbatim; no derivative works can be created Share Alike: Allowed to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the one governing your work
