In the province of **Marinduque**, those who partake in the celebration of **Moriones Festival** use morion masks to portray the Roman soldiers and Syrian mercenaries in the story of the Passion of the Christ. **Masskara** are always ornamented with smiling faces, giving rise to **Bacolod** being named the **\"City of Smiles\"**. In the **Visayan Region,** maskara, which means **Mask is a prominent feature of the festival** which also bears the same name The **Pintados de Pasi Festival** is celebrated in **Passi City,** located in the province of **Iloilo on Panay Island, Philippines.** Tattoos are called **Pinta** which makes Visayan people of Ilo-ilo and Panay regions to earn the name **"Pintados"** which later became the name of their festival. In Mindanao Area, Muslim people of **Zamboanga** are renowned for their colorful **"Vintas".** **Vinta** is a traditional outrigger **boat of Mindanao Island**. Vintas are characterized by their colorful rectangular log sails or bukay and bifurcated prows and sterns, which resemble the gaping mouth of a crocodile. Tribes of Mindanao are also known for **T\'nalak**, a traditional cloth made by a group of people in **Lake Sebu, South Cotabato called T\'bolis.** they are sometimes called the **\"Dream Weavers\".** **Sarimanok**, the legendary bird that has become an ubiquitous symbol of **Maranao art**. It is depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its beak or talons **Local Materials used by Filipino Contemporary Artis** **Abaca** which belongs to Banana family It is being used in making slippers, ropes, twine and hammock. **Bamboo** is use as raw material in creating many products. It is used in construction, textile, musical instruments, weapons, and many more **Buri** on the other hand is extracted from the matured leaves of the buri palm. The fiber is durable and resistant to moisture. **Pandan**, a tropical plant, is processed and transformed into splints that are being used as raw material. It is use in producing baskets, hats, picture frames and bags. **Rattan** which belongs to the palm family has different types such as high or low climbers, single stemmed or clustered rattan species. It is being used in manufacturing baskets, picture frames, furniture **The Order of National Artists** A National Artist is a Filipino citizen who has been given the rank and title of National Artist in recognition of his or her significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts and letters. **ORDER OF NATIONAL ARTIST (ONA)** Orden ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining is the **highest national recognition** given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts. It recognizes excellence in the fields of Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, and Architecture or Allied Arts. Established under Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27,1972 **Candidates may be nominated under one category** Dance - choreography, direction, performance Music - composition, direction, performance Theater - direction, performance, production design, light and sound design, playwriting Visual Arts - painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation art, mixed media works, illustration, graphic arts, performance art, imaging Literature - poetry, fiction, essay, literary/art criticism Film and Broadcast Arts - direction, writing, production design, cinematography, editing, animation, performance, new media Architecture and Allied Arts - architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design Design - industrial design, fashion design **CRITERIA FOR SELECTION** Living artists who are Filipino citizens at the time of nomination and at the awarding, as well as those who died after the establishment of the award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of their death. Work has contributed to nation-building Their distinctive style and pioneering works impacts succeeding generations of artist There is excellence in the practice of their art form; Their art form enriches artistic expression or style; Their work is prestigious national and international recognition. **HONORS AND PRIVILEGES** The rank and title of National Artist, as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines; The National Artist gold-plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and citation Living Awardees: A minimum cash award of Two Hundred Thousand Pesos(PhP200,000.00), net of taxes A minimum lifetime personal monthly stipend of Fifty Thousand Pesos (PhP50,000.00) Medical and Hospitalization benefits not exceeding PhP750,000.00 per year Living Awardees: Coverage by a life insurance policy A State Funeral A place of honor Posthumous Awardees: One-time minimum cash award of One Hundred Fifty Thousand Pesos (PhP150,000.00), net of taxes, payable to the legal heir/s. **Composition of Groups Involved in the ONA Selection Process** ONA Secretariat -- composed of the designated representatives from the NCCA and the CCP Special Research Group -- composed of culture and arts researchers with expertise in one or more disciplines Composition of Groups Involved in the ONA Selection Process ONA Jury of Experts -- composed of twentyfour (24) members, a maximum of three (3) representatives from each of the eight (8) categories selected from the pool of experts Any person who is nominated, who is nominating, or is related to a nominee up to the fourth degree of consanguinity or affinity shall not be qualified to be a member of the council or jury **Notable National Artists** **LEANDRO V. LOCSIN** National Artist for Architecture, 1990 Locsin reshaped the urban landscape with a distinctive architecture reflective of Philippine Art and Culture. Every Locsin Building is an original, and identifiable as a Locsin with themes of floating volume. **FRANCISCO T. MAÑOSA** National Artist for Architecture and Allied Arts, 2018 Known for his contributions to the development of modern Filipino architecture. He is best recognized for incorporating traditional Filipino elements into contemporary architectural designs. **LINO BROCKA** National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, 1997 Director for film and broadcast arts, espoused the term "freedom of expression" in the Philippine Constitution Brocka took his social activist spirit to the screen leaving behind 66 films which breathed life and hope for the marginalized sectors **FERNANDO AMORSOLO** National Artist for Visual Arts Fernando Amorsolo known as the "Grand Old Man of the Philippine Art\" was the first National Artist of the country. **CARLOS "BOTONG" FRANCISCO** National Artist for Visual Arts (1973) A renowned Filipino muralist and painter, celebrated for his vibrant and dramatic depictions of Philippine history and culture. For nearly three decades, Francisco painted murals showing the historical past of the Philippines. **GUILLERMO TOLENTINO** National Artist for Sculpture (1973) Guillermo Tolentino (1890--1976) was a renowned Filipino sculptor and professor, considered the \"Father of Philippine Arts.\" **ABDULMARI ASIA IMAO** National Artist for Visual Arts (1973) He was a Muslim artist from the Sulu Archipelago, and his works often incorporated themes of his heritage, focusing on the rich culture of the Moro people. Sarimanok (Sculpture), 2011 Pounded brass / Carved wood **VICENTE MANANSALA** National Artist for Visual Arts (1981) He is known for his contributions to the development of modern Filipino art, especially through his distinctive use of cubism. Manansala\'s style blended traditional Filipino themes with the innovative elements of modern art, often depicting everyday Filipino life, such as street scenes, religious imagery, and rural landscapes. Mother and Child, 1967 **AMADO V. HERNANDEZ** National Artist for Literature, 1973 He is celebrated for his works that championed social justice, the rights of the working class, and Filipino nationalism. His most famous works include \"Mga Ibong Mandaragit" and his poetry collection \"Bayang Malaya" **CARLOS P. ROMULO** National Artist for Literature (1982) He is recognized for his contributions to literature, particularly his writings on politics, history, and his experiences as a diplomat. Romulo\'s most famous works include \"I Walked with Heroes,\" an autobiography that reflects on his life as a young soldier during World War II, his diplomatic career, and his involvement in shaping the Philippines\' foreign policy. **HONORATA "ATANG" DELA RAMA** National Artist for Theater and Music (1987) A pioneering Filipino actress, singer, and performer, often referred to as the \"Queen of Kundiman.\" Dela Rama is best known for her mastery of the kundiman, a traditional Filipino love song. **Francisca Reyes Aquino** National Artist for Dance (1973) Acknowledged as the Folk Dance Pioneer Aquino\'s research and work in Filipino folk dance led to the discovery and documentation of many indigenous dances that were at risk of being lost. **LEVI CELERIO** National Artist for Literature & Music, 1997 He was a renowned Filipino composer and lyricist, recognized as a National Artist for Music in 1997. Sa Ugoy ng Duyan,\" \"Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal,\" and \"Mamang Sorbetero. ▪ The **National Living Treasures Award** is also known as **Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA). ** ▪ It is given by the government of the Philippines to individuals or groups for their contributions to the country's cultural heritage.  ▪ Recipients, called **National Living Treasures or 'Manlilikha ng Bayan,**' are Filipino citizens engaged in traditional Filipino arts. They must have exceptional skills that are widely practiced and passed on in their community.  ▪ The award recognizes a high level of technical and artistic excellence in traditional arts. To become a "Manlilikha ng Bayan", the candidate must possess the following qualifications:  He or she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/ traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines.  He/she must have engaged in a folk art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least 50 years.  He/she must have consistently performed or produced, over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive quality.  He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art  He/she must pass on and/or will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age or infirmity has left him/her incapable of teaching further his/her craft, may still be recognized if:  He/she had created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her art, thus achieving important contributions for its development. He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community's artistic tradition.  He/she has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known.  His/her community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft. **GAMABA AWARD RECIPIENTS** **Magdalena Gamayo**, born on August 13, 1924, is a prominent Filipino weaver specializing in the Ilocano tradition of panagabel weaving.  ▪ Panagabel = loom  **Inabel** refers to a traditional handwoven textile that showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the Ilocano people in the Philippines.  ▪ Inabel = woven/hinabi ▪ **On November 8, 2012**, she was honored with the National Living Treasure Award.  ▪ In late 2016, The House of Inabel was inaugurated, providing Gamayo a platform to further promote panagabel (loom weaving) ▪ **Teofilo Garcia** is a Filipino hatter born on March 27, 1941. ▪ Garcia, a farmer with five children, hails from San Quintin, Abra. ▪ He learned hat-making and basket weaving from his grandfather at the age of 15.  ▪ He is recognized as a National Living Treasure in the Philippines for crafting tabungaw hats, a type of Ilocano headwear made from a gourd called tabungaw. ▪ Garcia is known for producing sturdy and smooth tabungaw hats, wearing them in his daily life.  ▪ **Uwang Ahadas**, born on February 15, 1945, was a Filipino folk musician of the Yakan people and a recipient of the National Living Treasures Award. ▪ He was recognized as a National Living Treasure by the NCCA in the year 2000. ▪ On October 29, 2022, he died at the age of 77 **Eduardo Tubig Mutuc** is a renowned Filipino metalsmith and sculptor, known for his expertise in the craft of pinukpuk, which involves stamping embellishments on metal sheets.  ▪ Mutuc creates art using silver, wood, and bronze, producing both secular and religious pieces. Eduardo Mutuc Eduardo Mutuc Eduardo Mutuc  ▪ In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Mutuc was honored with the National Living Treasures Award in 2004. **Ginaw Bilog**, born on January 3, 1953, was a Hanunuo Mangyan who was a native of Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. Ginaw Bilog Ginaw Bilog\ ▪ Bilog gained recognition for his dedicated efforts in preserving the Mangyan poetry tradition known as ambahan. Ginaw Bilog  ▪ Ambahan is a distinctive form of poetry practiced by the Hanunuo Mangyan people of Mindoro. It features seven-syllable lines and is traditionally sung or recited during social gatherings ▪ This traditional poetry form covers various topics, including courtship, guidance for the young, requests for hospitality, and farewells to friends.  **Lang Dulay** ▪ A traditional T\'nalak weaver from the T\'boli people in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. ▪ She is celebrated for her intricate and beautiful designs that reflect the rich culture and traditions of the T\'boli. Lang Dulay  ▪ She was recognized as a National Living Treasure (or Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan) by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 1998. **Masino Intaray ** ▪ Musician and Storyteller ▪ Born in Brooke's Point, Palawan  ▪ named a National Living Treasure (Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan) in 1993  ▪ Aside from mastering the basal (gong ensemble) and kulilal (lyrical poem with lute and zither accompaniment) and bagit (instrumental music depicting the rhythms, movements and sounds of nature), he also plays the aroding (mouth harp) and the babarak (ring flute). It describes an object\'s height, width, and depth, making it appear to have volume and occupy space. **TEXTURE ** It refers to the surface quality of an object or artwork---how it feels to the touch or how it looks like it would feel. **SPACE ** It refers to the area within, around, or between objects or elements in a composition. **COLOR ** It is an element that refers to the visual perception of light as it is reflected or emitted by objects **VALUE ** Refers to the lightness or darkness of a color or shade **PRINCIPLES OF ARTS** CONTRAST   It is principle of art that refers to the use of opposing elements to create visual interest, excitement, and emphasis in a composition  **EMPHASIS ** It is a principle of art that focuses on creating a focal point or area of interest in an artwork. It guides the viewer\'s attention to the most important part of the composition  **MOVEMENT ** It refers to the use of different elements or qualities within a piece to create visual interest and diversity **RHYTHM ** It refers to the repetition or alternation of elements such as shapes, colors, lines, or forms, creating a sense of movement and flow.  **PROPORTION ** It refers to the relative size and scale of elements within a composition.  It deals with the relationship between different parts of an artwork and how they fit together in relation to one another.  **BALANCE ** It refers to the distribution of visual weight within a composition.  It creates a sense of stability and harmony by arranging elements in a way that feels balanced, whether symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial.  **HARMONY/UNITY ** It refers to the arrangement of elements within a composition that create a sense of cohesion, unity, and visual agreement.  **VARIETY ** It refers to the use of different elements, forms, colors, textures, and shapes within a composition to create visual interest and avoid monotony
