Bands like The Eraserheads, Rivermaya, and Sandwich emerged, playing a mix of rock, pop, and folk, often with Filipino lyrics. Early Philippine Films Filipinos started making movies in 1919. However, it would be important to know that the film industry in the Philippines began through the initiative of foreign entrepreneurs. Swiss entrepreneurs introduced film shows in Manila as early as 1897, regaling audiences with documentary films’ lips showing recent events and natural calamities in Europe. Not only that but the arrival of silent films, along with American colonialism, in 1903 created a movie market. But these film clips were still novelties. They failed to hold the audience’s attention because of their novelty and the fact that they were about foreigners. When two American entrepreneurs made a film in 1912 about Jose Rizal’s execution, the sensation made it clear that the Filipinos needed material close to their hearts. This heralded the making of the first Filipino film. ❖ The credit of being the first Filipino to make a film goes to Jose Nepomuceno, whom historians dub as the “Father of Philippine Movies”. ❖ 1942 - movie production stopped and Filipinos went back to watching and producing stage shows. ❖ Films production after world war II - contain war stories and heroism. ❖ The Philippines regained its strength and flourished during the 1950’s. ❖ Four film studios became prominent and considered as the big 4 (LVN, Sampaguita, Lebran, and Premiere) ❖ FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) Giving film awards ❖ Filipino movies, directors and producers started to be recognized not just locally but internationally. ❖ Independent producers dominated film industry in the succeeding years ❖ Slapstick comedies and action movies became popular ❖ The government regulated filmmaking during the Marcos regime. With the establishment of (BCMP) Board of Censorship Motion Pictures. ❖ Lino Brocka, Celso Ad, and Ishmael Bernal - Directors who rose during the Marcos regime. Their works revolved around nationhood, love in a hostile setting and social issues Alternative Cinema or Independent Film - These film makers produced movies through lightweight technologies. Their screening venues are schools, international film festivals, and outreach programs. Kidlat Tahimik is one of the known independent film director In the Contemporary period, Philippine Film revolved around a variety of subjects and themes like martyr wife, superhero, action, melodramas, comedies etc. Among all the art forms, the film has largest audience. FINAL PT OPTION 3 - (Group or individual) CREATE A VLOG that promotes the Sustainable Development goals ARCHITECTURE ARCHITECTURE ★ In the American Colonial and Contemporary Period, the Philippine architecture adopted the Modern Western architectural style while taking consideration the physical and socio-cultural situation of the country. ★ Philippine architecture was characterized as simple, rational, and functional. ★ In the 20th century the young Filipinos who studied in American Universities and institutes went back to the country and brought changes in the Philippine architecture. They introduced the neoclassical style in Building structures ○ Juan Arellano, Carlos Barreto, and Antonio Toledo ARCHITECTURE - Juan Arellano Arellano, of course, was the brilliant genius behind some of the most iconic heritage buildings in the country, and would have been declared a National Artist for Architecture had he not died at the age of 72 in 1960. Filipino homes evolved into the Tsalet system during the American era. An emphasis on sanitation redefined architecture in the Philippines as history shifted from the Spanish period to the American period. This meant major changes in the designs of homes. Architecture in the country departed from the native tradition after the world war II. Real estate development started to take place and two story house were introduced. Filipino houses were Americanized. Urban housing, multi-story tenements, and government housing projects emerged due to increasing population and decreasing land availability.
