Art is very dynamic and it is continuing to change. Contemporary art is the result of its evolution from medieval times to our present times. Contemporary art is very different as it gives identity and uniqueness to its artist. It is outside the box because it is the mix and match of art styles and techniques of all times. In this module you will clearly understand the concept of contemporary art in the settings of our beloved country Philippines. Truly Philippines are blessed with great creative artist. Through this module you will appreciate art holistically and not only for its aesthetic value. ACTIVITY 1.1.: Stop Look and Listen Observe your surroundings. List down on your notebook, five artworks in your place. Why do you consider it as an art work? Art Work Basis REMEMBER There is no one universal definition of art though generally we can say art is the conscious creation of something beautiful or meaningful using human’s skill and imagination. Human artists are making use of different medium; this may be canvass for painting, walls for graffiti, and stage for music, dance and theater and even our trash/ garbage nowadays are recycled to create an art work. This what makes contemporary arts. Architect Carlo Luiz Ganzon fifth place on Architecture Board exams during his time; consider art as form of communication. This can be attributed to the visual art work during prehistoric time in the cave drawing, other early artifacts and Filipino folk song and rituals. The visual and performing arts are the way of people to express themselves and share their feelings and opinions. Angelita Benavides Perez, former president of Philippine Art Educators Association consider Art as a way of life of people and one of discipline of humanities. She even differentiates humanities from science to give her concepts of art. She said that Science is our external world wherein it is objective and follows scientific process while humanities on the other hand is an expression of the internal world of person which it is subjective in nature. Aside from self expression artist create art for several reasons such recognition thru their art the artist is hoping to be famous, economic because artwork is great mean of livelihood, worship or religious purpose and some are just driven by their impulse and passion. 5 CAR11/12IAC-0a-1 What is Contemporary Art? Contemporary Art is considered as the most recent form of art. In the book of Carlo Luis Guazon, It says that art can be classified into two forms; Visual art for tangible and Performing Art for non-tangible.He also tackled the term contemporary art forms which is usually a combination two or more forms of art. This module presents Figure 1 to illustrate the concept of contemporary art which an integrated or mix-up different forms of art. Figure 1: Forms of Art VISUAL ART Fine arts and decorative arts are two classical forms of visual art. Painting, drawing, sculpture, print, graphic art, calligraphy and architecture are some of the examples of Fine arts in which they are beautiful indeed but has no practical use. On the other hand Decorative arts are known both for its beauty and functions. Examples of decorative arts are textile art, glassware, jewelry, furniture, earthenware, metal craft and interior design. During medieval times decorative art is considered as lower version of art only until the spring of contemporary art forms when both fine arts and decorative arts were incorporated together. It can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body or presence in a medium, and a relationship between performer and audience. Performance art can happen anywhere, in any type of venue or setting and for any length of time. 6 CAR11/12IAC-0a-1 5. Installation – It is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. Generally, the term is applied to interior spaces, whereas exterior interventions are often called public art, land art or intervention art; however, the boundaries between these terms overlap. PERFORMING ARTS is defined in Britannica as forms of art in which artists use their voices, bodies or inanimate objects to convey artistic expression, and usually acted in front of live audience. It says that there are three major types of performing arts are Music, Dance and Theater. MUSIC - is an art that includes vocal and instrumental sound for beauty of form or self-expression and usually according to cultural standards. It follows rhythm, melody and harmony, this is based on the definition of Gordon Epperson and excerpt on his research entitled ― The Music Symbol: A Study of Philosophic Theory of Music. It comes in a variety of genres, some of them are Art music. DANCE – a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected sequence of human body movement. According to the book of Foster (2011) dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin. It also comes in different forms and styles some of which are ballet, belly dance, break dance, hip-hop dance, modern dance, traditional dance and contemporary dance. THEATER - is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers, typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance. Elements of art, such as painted scenery and stagecraft such as lighting are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience. The book Marvin Carlson suggests that visual elements/arts bring out the presence of the actors which power up the play. Mime, puppetry, tragedy, opera, musical theater and traditional theater are some of the known example of theater. CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS Music Forms Style and Techniques 1.
