ESP Characteristics of ESP Courses Presented by: Ma. Leah P. Esquillo Carver (1983) states that there are three features common to ESP courses: authentic material, purpose-related orientation, and self-direction. AUTHENTIC MATERIAL ESP courses prioritize the use of real- world materials relevant to the learners' specific fields or professions. Authentic materials help learners develop the skills needed to understand and produce language used in their actual work or academic environments. Types of ESP Materials Content-based materials language form, language notion, language function, and situation Competency-based materials Language skills PURPOSE-RELATED ORIENTATION It refers to the simulation of communicative tasks required of the target setting. This feature emphasizes the practical, task-based nature of ESP courses. Activities are designed to simulate real-world scenarios, ensuring that learners practice the language in meaningful and relevant contexts. ESP is concernedSELF-DIRECTION with turning learners into users” (Carver, 1983: 134). ESP courses encourage learners to take an active role in their learning process. Self-direction means learners are often required to identify their goals, monitor their progress, and engage in independent study outside the classroom. This approach fosters autonomy, critical thinking, and the ability to continue learning beyond the course. BENEFITS OF ESP Learning Learning Learning Speed Efficiency Effectiven ess Benefits of ESP Learning Speed ESP results in faster acquisition of required linguistic items. This is because it follows the pattern of the native speakers’ acquisition of language for specific purposes, in which speakers learn what they need, when they need it, in Benefits of ESP Learning Efficiency Learning efficiency is a measure of academic progress that takes into account both performance improvement and the student's learning time. The needs analysis is of vital importance here since it enables trainers to determine the specific requirements of trainees. Benefits of ESP Learning Effectiveness On completion of an ESP course, the trainees are ready to use language appropriately and correctly in job related tasks, which have been identified prior to the course by means of a needs analysis. Individual Activity Task: Create a flier that effectively showcases the three key characteristics of the ESP course. Submission Details: Ensure your output is professional, visually appealing, and clearly communicates the course's features. Submit your completed flier by January 22, 2025. Thank you!
