Chapter 2 Personality and Learning Chapter 2/ Slide 1 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Canada Inc. What Is Personality? Behavior is partly a function of people’s personalities. People have a variety of personality characteristics. Personality is the relatively stable set of psychological characteristics that influences the way an individual interacts with others and how he or she feels, thinks, and behaves. An individual’s personality summarizes his or her personal style of dealing with others. It is reflected in the distinctive ways that they react to people, situations, and problems Copyright © 2017 Pearson Canada Inc. Chapter 2/ Slide 2 The Five-Factor Model of Personality (FFM) People are unique and complex. However, there are five basic but general dimensions that describe personality: 1. Extraversion versus Introvert 2. Emotional stability 3. Agreeableness 4. Conscientiousness 5. Openness to experience Chapter 2/ Slide 3 Extraverts vs. Introverts Extraversion means the extent to which a person is outgoing and enjoy being with others (sociable) versus shy. Persons who score high on extraversion tend to be sociable, outgoing, energetic, and joyful. Introvert means the extent to which a person enjoy being alone. High extraverts enjoy social situations, while introverts avoid them Copyright © 2017 Pearson Canada Inc.
