Faculty of Business and Management CHAPTER 2 Foundation of Individual Behavior In this chapter, the students are expected to 1. Explain how the biographical characteristics are relevant to organizational behavior. LEARNING 2. Demonstrate the roles of intellectual and physical abilities to organizational behavior. OUTCOME 3. Explore the importance of learning in shaping individual behavior. 4. Describe the importance of personality in organization. WHAT IS INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR? Fundamental aspect of organizational behavior, as it shapes the actions, decisions, and performance of employees within the workplace. The behavior of individuals in organizations is influenced by a range of factors, including biographical characteristics, abilities, learning, and personality. BIOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS AGE (generational differences, career stages and aging process) GENDER (communication styles, leadership styles, decision-making processes, and perceptions of job satisfaction and work-life balance) RACE & ETHNICITY (communication styles, leadership styles, perceptions of workplace discrimination and bias, and experiences of identity) INTELLECTUAL ABILITY Intellectual abilities are those that relate to mental processes, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity. These abilities are crucial for success in many jobs that require complex cognitive tasks, such as managers, engineers, and ABILITY scientists. There are seven dimensions that are most commonly referenced as constituting intellectual abilities, which include number aptitude, verbal comprehension, perceptual speed, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, spatial visualization, and memory. Dimension of Intellectual Ability PHYSICAL ABILITY Physical abilities are those that relate to physical attributes, such as strength, agility, and coordination. These abilities are crucial for success in many jobs that require physical labor, such as construction workers, athletes, and healthcare workers. ABILITY Nine Basic Physical Abilities LEARNING Learning is a fundamental aspect of organizational behavior. It is the process by which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities that allow them to perform their work effectively. Learning occurs through a variety of experiences, such as formal training programs, informal on-the-job learning, and self-directed learning. Organizations that prioritize learning and development can create a culture of continuous improvement that benefits both the individual and the organization. Personality refers to the unique set of traits, behaviors, and characteristics that make an individual who they are. Personality traits can influence an individual's behavior in an organization.
