CEFUROXIME cephalosporin antibiotics 2nd generation What are its uses? is used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin, bones, joints, bladder, or kidneys is taken orally or through an injection. Dosage Forms oral suspension: powder for injection: tablet: 125mg/5mL 750mg 1.5g 250mg 250mg/5mL 500mg 7.5g 75g 225g Doctors recommend a Cefuroxime dose every 12 hours for five to ten days (depending on the severity of the infection, age, and condition of the patient). Action Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, by Binds to bacterial cell wall membrane, causing cell death. What types of bacteria? Cefuroxime is an FDA-approved antibiotic effective against Streptococcus pneumonia, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae. Side Effects CNS: Dizziness, headache, seizures GI: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, anorexia. HEMA: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia Derm: rashes. Nursing Considrations Culture infection, and arrange for sensitivity tests before and during therapy if expected response is not seen Always wash hands thoroughly and disinfect equipment to help prevent the spread of infection. Close monitoring for side effects.
