Computer has become a part of our daily lives since it can store a large volume of information. Nowadays, computers are used not just in businesses, transportation, communication, and education but also for personal use. In just one click, one can access information just about anything in a jiffy. Computers can help a person do his task easily, accurately and quickly. Computers can even help save lives especially in the field of medicine. Even disabled people can use computers to guide them in their normal activities. Thus, computers have now become a necessity and not just a luxury. For most of us, computers promise greater help in the tedious jobs such as research, weather forecast, communication, transportation and in almost aspects of our daily living. For others, the discovery of computers is a big treat to them, for it may take over almost all the activities of man. However, man is still in control of society. Nevertheless the fast pace of computer technology development should not be ignored. The best way to cope with technological convergence lies in Computer Education. This module helps students build a concrete understanding of how computers work and how various types of computing programs, devices and accessories are used in school, work, and at home. The different lessons in this module will provide comprehensive knowledge of Computer Basic and Concepts and the various ways you can work with it. 1 Computer Education 8 LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to: Define Operating System Identify the different Windows Operating System Identify the different parts of MS Windows Desktop Explain the different parts of MS Windows Screen Identify the different parts of a typical Window Operating System Windows XP MS DOS Windows Vista Windows 1.0 Windows 7 Windows 2.0 Desktop Windows 3.0 Icons Windows 95 Start Button Windows 98 System Tray Windows 2000 2 Computer Education 8 Lesson Operating System does major roll between User and Computer Hardware. It provides an environment to user to do his activities without thinking about mechanisms which are running in computer hardware. Therefore we can define computer Operating System is software that manage computer hardware. An Operating System (OS) is a software that acts as an interface between computer hardware components and the user. Every computer system must have at least one operating system to run other programs. Applications like Browsers, MS Office, Notepad Games, etc., need some environment to run and perform its tasks. Different companies are making operating systems in nowadays and Microsoft is a major company through those companies. Microsoft introduced Windows operating system for IBM compatible computers in 1985. It is the first step of Windows operating system. Microsoft named their operating system as Windows by considered about it graphical block user interfaces. Microsoft's Window 7 is an operating system for personal computers. It is an upgrade from Windows Vista and is designed to address problems and deficiencies in the earlier versions of the software. It looks very much familiar to Windows Vista but was streamlined for easier use. Before Windows 7 was launched, several other operating systems was designed for personal computers. Windows operating system dominates the personal computer world because each of its versions was designed not only for the basic needs of ordinary users but even for high-end ones. Paul Allen and Bill Gates in 1981 EVOLUTION OF WINDOWS Two computer wizards, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, had a vision for personal computing as early as 1975. They imagined a computer for every household. This vision was the foundation for Microsoft. Gates and Allen exceeded their original version for Microsoft because the company is a technological giant today and changed the lives of many people all over the world. The name Microsoft, which was initially Micro-soft, came from the term "microcomputer" and "software." 3 Computer Education 8 MS-DOS In July 1980, IBM contacted Microsoft for their project code-named "Chess." MIcrosoft researched and developed a new operating system for IBM's computers. It was named MS-DOS or Microsoft Disk Operating System. It managed the computer hardware and served as the messenger between the computer hardware and the programs such as the word processor. The following year, IBM's personal computers started operating on MS-DOS, signaling the introduction of a new computer language. People learned how to use cryptic commands such as "C:" and the backslash (\). The MS-DOS was an excellent operating system. It was, however, quite difficult to understand so Microsoft continued to develop a better operating system. WINDOWS 1.0 On November 20, 1985, Microsoft launched its first Windows program, the Windows 1.0. The term "Windows" came about from the boxes or computing "windows" that are essential in the new operating system. Unlike MS-DOS in which commands were inputted through a keyboard, Windows 1.0 used the mouse to point and click components onscreen. It was a system designed for personal computer users. Windows 1.0 had dropdown menus, scroll bars, icons, and dialog boxes, all of which made it user-friendly. Programs can be switched without closing an active program and restarting a new one. The programs that were included in Windows 1.0 were File Manager, Card file, Paint, Windows Write, Notepad, calculator, clock, and calendar. The operating system even had a game, the Reversi. WINDOWS 2.0 and WINDOWS 2.11 During the second half of the 1980's, more Windows programs were introduced aimed at making the computer works faster. Windows 2.0 was released on December 9, 1987. It has desktop icons and a bigger memory. Improvements such as overlapping windows, control screen layout, a control panel, and keyboard shortcuts sped up the completion of tasks. Windows 2.0 was the first platform for Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel applications. This version could run on a dual floppy drive sans a hard drive. It introduced the minimize and maximize functions. However, Windows 2.0 still depended much on DOS. 4 Computer Education 8 It was for Windows 2.0 that non-Microsoft software developers first produced and released Windows-based programs. The processors of Windows 2.0 was Intel 286. It was upgraded with an Intel 386 processor for extended memory capabilities. WINDOWS 3.0 Windows 3.0 and 3.1 were released in 1990 and 1992, respectively, becoming the first widely sucessful versions of Windows. Compared with earlier OS versions, Windows 3.0 and 3.1 had better graphics with 16 colors and improved icons. Both OS used the Intel 386 processor, making the program runs faster. Windows 3.0 had three new programs, namely the Program Manager, File Manager, and Print Manager. Three new games were also included. Windows 3.1 featured a networking support to connect one computer to another. It is capable of networking up to 25 computers working simultaneously in group. WINDOWS 95 Microsoft released Windows 95 on August 24, 1995. It sold a record- breaking 7 million copies of this operating system for the first five weeks alone. The product release was Microsoft's most plublicized launch. The late 90s was the era of fax machines, modems, the Internet, and e- mail. Windows 95 came with Internet support, dial-up networking and plug-and-play capablities for easy installation of both hardware and software. Besides enhanced multimedia capabilities, this OS had more powerful mobile computing and integrated networking features. Windows 95 ran on a 486 processor. It was in this operating system where the Start menu, taskbar, and resizing buttons (minimize, maximize, restore and close) first appeared on each window. Windows 95 was one of Microsoft's better operating systems in terms of technology and usability. It brought computing to the masses. Despite its many advantages, users complained about the longer booting time and the need to reload several times each day. In addition, the OS required expensive computer upgrades. WINDOWS 98 Windows 98 was released on June 25, 1998. It has Signiticant updates, tixes, and support for new peripherals If also includes additional protection tor files on the computer such as backing up the Registry automatically. Its Active Desktop feature allows Users to customize the desktop. 5 Computer Education 8 Windows 98 was the first version of Windows designed tor consumers. It is described as an operating system that "works better, plays better." Windows 98 provided teatures upgrades such as quicker way to open and close programs. Its Quick Launch bar, lets the user open programs without going through the Start menu or looking for them on the desktop. This feature is found on the right of the Start button. One can add shortcuts to a program in the bar by dragging the icon of the program in the Start menu to the bar. Windows 98 also delivered the latest browser experience such as getting and receiving e-mail and reading news online. It provided supports for a DVD drive and USB port and for devices such as digital camera, video recorder, and scanner. WINDOWS 2000 Windows 2000 was launched on February 17, 2000. One of its best features is its capability to support mulfilingual documents.. This means it can display documents in Asian, Middle East, and European languages. It allows the user to select the user intertace in displaying documents in different languages. Windows 2000 was designed to appeal to small businesses and professionals as well as to the more technical and bigger business market. It is more stable than Windows 98. WINDOWS XP Windows XP succeeded Windows 2000. It came Out on October 25, 2001. It was available in fwenty five languages. It was one ot the best- selling products of Microsoft. It was available in two editions, the home and professional editions. Windows XP is more Flexible. It featured several improvements from its earlier versions. The most notable of these is the new User interface. The window has cleaner look and feell. The Start menu was revised and the task bar was updated. The theme ot the display in the windows can be altered. Windows XP has digital photography, a teature that allows the transter of pictures directly from the digital cameras to the computer. It also has Windows Media Player, which lets one play and listen to music. WINDOWS VISTA In 2006, Microsoft released Windows Vista. The program has security features aimed at addressing computer threats such as viruses and hackers. Its user account control is designed to help the user protect the computer from harmful software. 6 Computer Education 8 Also, it features an enhanced Windows Media Center tor people starting to use the computer as a device for watching television programs, viewing and sending photographs, and editing videos. WINDOWS 7 Microsoft Windows 7 was released in 2009. It features faster performance than earlier Windows versions to make tasks simpler and easier. Windows 7 was a byproduct of Windows Vista. It focused on gradual upgrades to Vista's features and provided compatibility with the applications and hardware that Vista was not able to support. Windows 7 is the most popular and user-friendly among the Windows operating systems. Its sales reached 240 million copies for the first year alone, making it the fastest-selling operating system of all time. Microsoft released six versions of Windows 7. Windows 7 Starter, the first version, was intended tor developing countries such as most countries in Asia, Africa, and South America to serve basic computing needs for netbooks. It can run only three applications at a time. The Microsoft Windows Desktop was first introduced with Microsoft Windows 95 and has been included with all versions of Windows since then. Below is a basic example of the Microsoft Windows desktop. The Windows 7 Desktop Screen 7 Computer Education 8 PARTS OF THE MICROSOFT WINDOWS SCREEN a) Desktop The desktop is the main screen area that you see after you turn on your computer and log on to Windows. Windows Taskbar The taskbar has the greatest visual change in Windows 7. It has improved thumbnail previews, easier-to-see icons, and buttons to allow Jump Lists feature easy access to recently opened files or applications. WINDOWS 8 Windows 8 is an operating system (OS) from Microsoft released in October 2012. Windows 8 succeeds the previous Windows 7 operating system and represents the most modern upgrade of the Windows operating system in recent decades. Windows 8 is the first Microsoft operating system to feature the Windows Runtime (WinRT) platform, which allows users to run apps written in Microsoft’s typography-based design language known as Metro. This same language is now utilized in other Microsoft products, including the Xbox 360 and Outlook.com. WINDOWS 10 Windows 10 is an operating system developed by Microsoft. It is the successor to Windows 8.1. Windows 10 combines the best features of previous versions, such as the familiar Start menu from Windows 7 and the live tiles from Windows 8, to provide a modern and intuitive user experience. 11 Computer Education 8 Windows 10 introduces several new features and improvements compared to its predecessors. One notable change is the return of the Start menu, which combines the traditional menu with live tiles for quick access to apps and information. Additionally, Windows 10 includes the virtual assistant Cortana, improved multitasking with the Task View feature, a new web browser called Microsoft Edge, and enhanced security measures like Windows Hello for biometric authentication. WINDOWS 11 Windows 11 is the latest major release of Microsoft's Windows NT operating system, released on October 5, 2021. It succeeded Windows 10 (2015) and is available for free for any Windows 10 devices that meet the new Windows 11 system requirements. Windows 11 features major changes to the Windows shell influenced by the canceled Windows 10X, including a redesigned Start menu, the replacement of its "live tiles" with a separate "Widgets" panel on the taskbar, the ability to create tiled sets of windows that can be minimized and restored from the taskbar as a group, and new gaming technologies inherited from Xbox Series X and Series S such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage on compatible hardware. Internet Explorer (IE) has been replaced by the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge as the default web browser, like its predecessor, Windows 10, and Microsoft Teams is integrated into the Windows shell. Microsoft also announced plans to allow more flexibility in software that can be distributed via the Microsoft Store and to support Android apps on Windows 11 (including a partnership with Amazon to make its app store available for the function). 12 Computer Education 8 Whenever you open a program, file, or folder, it appears on your screen in a box or frame called a window (that's where the Windows operating system gets its name). Because windows are everywhere in Windows, it's important to understand how to move them, change their size, or just make them go away. Although the contents of every window are different, all windows share some things in common. For one thing, windows always appear on the desktop—the main work area of your screen. In addition, most windows have the same basic parts. ❖ Title bar. Displays the name of the document and program (or the folder name if you're working in a folder). ❖ Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons. These buttons hide the window, enlarge it to fill the whole screen, and close it, respectively. ❖ Menu bar. Contains items that you can click to make choices in a program. See Using menus, buttons, bars, and boxes. ❖ Scroll bar. Lets you scroll the contents of the window to see information that is currently out of view. ❖ Borders and corners. You can drag these with your mouse pointer to change the size of the window. Other windows might have additional buttons, boxes, or bars. But they'll usually have the basic parts, too. 13 Computer Education 8 REFERENCES: Domingo, Gemmy Ronacin. (2015), Kids @ E-world 4, Quezon City:FNB Educational Inc.
