**Byzantine culture and art** At the beginning, the Byzantine Empire maintained the culture of the Romans. However, during Justinian's reign, it developed a culture of its own which mixed elements of Greek and Roman culture. Eventually, Greek replaced Latin as the official language. In 1054, the East--West Schism occurred. It divided Christianity into eastern and western branches. In the west was the Roman Catholic Church. In the east was the Orthodox Catholic Church, which recognised the Patriarch of Constantinople as its highest authority. The Byzantine Empire was a meeting place of many different cultures. This is evident in its art and architecture, which was a fusion of Roman and eastern influences. It is particularly famous for its religious imagery, which influenced European medieval painting.
