On the otherhand stratification means layering Social Stratification The hierarchical structure of class and status in any society System by which society rank category of people in hierarchy FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF STRATIFICATION Characteristics The social stratification is characteristic of society — not just due to individual differences Social Stratification persist or can change over generation Social stratification is universal but not variable Social stratification involves both inequality and beliefs CLASSIFICATION OF STRATIFICATION SYSTEM Close system In close system the society have no chances of moving either up or down in community Best example of the close system is the Indians caste system Open system Have more chances of moving up or down in social stratification SOCIAL STRATIFICATION IN SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES Functionalism where stratification is necessary to induce people with special intelligence, knowledge, and skills to enter the most important occupations. Conflict theory -results from lack of opportunity and from discrimination and prejudice against the poor, women, and people of color.
