BNUR1900 Nursing Fundamentals Indigenous Studies Peter Kennedy RN, BScN, MBA November 28, 2023 During this module, students will:  Examine the reports from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission  Describe the concepts of structural racism, child welfare, poverty, and the justice system in relation to nursing practice  Describe components of Indigenous cultural orientation in relation to nursing practice Learning  Examine selected chronic illness experiences relevant to the Indigenous peoples of Canada Objectives  Apply research findings to the provision of nursing care to the Indigenous peoples of Canada, with consideration of assessment, and intervention underpinned by cultural safety, health equity, and social justice  Differentiate between Indigenous health from a global perspective and Indigenous health from a Canadian perspective  Consider the provision of health care for Indigenous elders Scholar Entry to 9.3 Engages in self-reflection to interact from a Practice place of cultural humility and create culturally Competencies safe environments where clients perceive respect for their unique health care practices, preferences, and decisions. 1) Relate principles of Indigenous knowledge to career field 2) Analyze the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities 3) Explain the relationship between land and Indigenous identity within Indigenous societies Learning 4) Compare Indigenous and Canadian Outcomes perceptions of inclusion and diversity 5) Analyze racism in relation to Indigenous people 6) Generate strategies for reconciling Indigenous and Canadian relations 7) Formulate approaches for engaging Indigenous community partners  Independent study and review of assigned readings  Guest speaker in classroom at TBD (please attend)!
