PSYCH 1 EXP What is behavior? Behavior refers to any observable action made by a living person or animal. is best described as any kind of response that can be seen and measured Examples of behavior include: eating sleeping sneezing play behavior But this is also includes biological processes, such as activation of regions of the brain or levels of neurotransmitter. operationalization: how a variable is defined by the researcher and the way the variable is measured in the research Because a single behavior ca be interpreted as meaning many things, our starting point is to operationalise the behavior we are studying and states how we are operationalizing the behavior in our study “ aggression will be measured by the number of times a child hits a toy” in another study, the psychologist could operationalist aggression in a very different way. Is psychology is a science? science uses an empirical approach, John Locke states that the only source of knowledge comes through the senses e.g sight, hearing The empirical approach through gaining knowledge through experience quickly became the scientific approach and greatly influenced the development of physics and chemistry in the 17th and 18th century. The empirical approach turned into a method of inquiry that used careful observations and experiments to gather facts and evidence. PSYCH 1 EXP 1 Empirical means observable and verifiable data- such as how many times a person yawned during a lesson. common sense assumptions without evidence psychology tests to see if common sense is right or not RESEARCH STAGES: foundations of any research in psychology often starts with idea and move to create a hypothesis hypothesis-statement predicting the outcome of research OBSERVE observe behavior and form an aim to be tested HYPOTHESIS form a hypothesis which makes this aim testable by 'operationalising' the variable, so that they can be measured METHOD choose a method to test the hypothesis, draw conclusions and form another hypothesis if your original one was wrong AIM and HYPOTHESIS to investigate how much alcohol it takes to make people slur their speech.A lab experiment was chosen as the method Hypothesis: drinking 3 or more glasses of whisky will cause people to slur a well-known tongue twister METHOD We will manipulate how much whisky they drunk(2,3 or 4) We will measure the effect of alcohol by finding out if they can say a well-known tongue twister or not PSYCH 1 EXP 2 PROCEDURE We will divide the class into 3 groups of participants and one group 2 glasses to drink and so on After they drunk the whiskey, they will be asked to recite the tongue twister and say mistakes will be counted Conclusion Conclusions can be drawn from the findings: the more people drank the more mistakes they made was the experiment flawed in any way? could we improve it? what have we learnt? what recommendations should we take? what are the strengths of this study? What is research? Research is a way of investigating the mind and behavior There are two experimental Research methods: Laboratory experiment Field experiment And some non-experimental methods: Observation Self-report-interview Self report-questionaire Correlation Case study PSYCH 1 EXP 3
