A technological barrier caused by a problem in machinery or instruments used to transmit the message. Faulty machines Device Problems Network problems Internet issues etc. Lack of technical skills for handling the device/machine Incompatibility of device Example: A speaker was giving speech suddenly mic stopped working. Communication failed because of faulty mic. It is a technological barrier. Case Study Situation: Ramesh is trying to call his friend Rakesh to invite him for his birthday party. But because of faulty/poor mobile network Ramesh could not call Rakesh. Sender: Ramesh Message: Birthday Invitation Channel: Mobile Receiver: Rakesh Barrier: Technological Barrier – Network Issue Result: Communication Failed. Remedy: The machines/devices must be inspected thoroughly before using it for communication. 1 Sudarshan K Patil Professional Communication 312002 Psychological Barriers: It is the barriers to effective communication created from the lack of interest of the people from whom the communication is meant. People do not pay attention to the communication which are not interesting to them and which do not fulfil their want. The following are some parameters which are responsible for psychological barriers. 1. Perception: 2. Prejudice Mind 3. Closed Mindedness 4. Emotions: 5. Viewpoint: 6. Inferiority/Superiority Complex 7. Ego 8. Generation Gap Example: Teacher was teaching in the class and some students were talking continuously and disturbing the class. Teacher became angry on those students. The whole class was disturbed for some time. The teaching learning process got disturbed. Case Study Situation: Ramesh and Umesh both were best friends. Both worked in same company. Ramesh got the promotion. So, he arranged the party for family, friends and colleagues. He gave invitation to his best friend Umesh through Email. But Umesh remained absent for the party as he was not happy because of his best friend Ramesh’ promotion. Sender: Ramesh Message: Party Invitation Channel: Written Communication Receiver: Umesh Barrier: Psychological Barrier – Jealousy Result: Communication Failed. Remedy: Umesh must appreciate his friend Ramesh’s promotion positively. 2 Sudarshan K Patil Professional Communication 312002 Linguistic/ Language Barriers: Language is the medium through which the process of communication takes place. Language barriers are those features of language use that result in miscomprehension or complete loss in communication. Language barriers deal with aspects of language use that make it difficult to understand. This could be because of a variety of factors like differences in educational background, level of literacy and country or area of the language user.It is a barrier which prevents two or more people from communication due to language itself. The following are some parameters of language which create barrier in communication. 1. Wrong Pronunciation 2. Poor Handwriting 3. Spelling mistakes 4. Grammar Mistakes 5. over use of technical Jargon 6. Multiple use of language (A difference in language) 7. Lack of fluency 8. Dialect variation 9. Allusions Example: A teacher taught mathematics in the class by using bi-lingual method. She used to teach in English and sometimes in Kannada. Some students from Marathi medium did not understand. The teaching learning process got disturbed. Case Study Situation: Ramesh wrote an email to Umesh about his visit to his home. Umesh did not understand his email because Ramesh committed many grammatical mistakes. Umesh replied to email and requested Ramesh to do conversation on phone. Sender: Ramesh Message: Visit to Umesh’ home Channel: Written Communication Receiver: Umesh Barrier: Language/ Linguistic Barrier – (grammatical mistakes) Result: Communication Failed. Remedy: Ramesh must improve his written communication. He should avoid grammatical mistakes for successful communication. 3
