Dr. Eric Lund: A Swedish Baptist Missionary baptized Braulio Manikan.** | **1922** | | **Braulio Manikan** | **A native of Aklan Panay in Barcelona Spain and the First Filipino Baptist.** | **June 1923** | | **Rev. Dr. Eric Lund & Braulio Manikan** | **They translated the Gospels and Acts into the Hiligaynon language.** | | | **American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society (ABFMS)** | **commissioned and financed their work.** | | | **May 1900** | **They arrived in Iloilo Philippines Mission work resulted in organizing churches in** | | | **Iloilo, Negros & Capiz** | **Rev. Charles Briggs sought to impress on Dr. T. S. Barbour that a school should be started.** | | | **1901** | | | | **1903** | **Dr. Joseph Robbins and Dr. Peter planned that a boys' school should be started.** | | | **1904** | **The 11 Baptist Missionaries met in Iloilo and organized the Philippine Baptist Mission Conf. (PBMC)** | **Central Spirit** | | **December 2 1904** | **The PBMC voted to establish two schools: Industrial school for boys and Bible School to train pastors.** | **1942-1945** | | **1904** | **Rev. William O. Valentine was elected principal of the two schools.** **1. Industrial School for Boys, and;** **2. Stuart.** **:The Stuart Hall is the oldest bldg. in CPU.** **:The college was organized into two divisions: Department of Education and Liberal Arts and Department of Theology.** **Central Philippine College was destroyed.** **:11 American Baptist Missionaries were captured & killed by the Japanese soldiers including the one little boy in Hopevale Tapaz, Capiz.** **:They were called "Hopevale Martyrs." Dr. Francis Howard Rose acting President of Central Philippine College was one of those who died.** | | **Dec. 20, 1943** | **CPU's famous slogan. Dr. Rex Drilon said: "Out of the ruins & ashes of war shall rise a greater Central."** | ## **The Story of Hopevale** :When the Japanese forces invaded the island of Panay on April, 1942, (11) American Baptist missionaries went into hiding in the mountains of Katipunan, Tapaz, Capiz. :Some missionaries had been serving at Central Philippine College when the war broke out. They thought the war would not last long so they chose to escape rather than surrender. :Hiding place (Hopevale) - a small clearing near the top of the mountain "in the deep recesses of evergreen" reached only by a "winding and misleading trail." ## **Melissa Maru T.
