**[Theories of Change - Anthropology]** *How do cultures change? Let's find out!* **[Section 1]: How do cultures change by interacting with each other?** Watch [[this]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3Xd-zvpy0I) linked video. *For each term, please provide a definition and an example.* *Define the following terms. Then, think of an example of each!* **Acculturation: (Integration) Culture that comes in and does not lose its old identity. It merges with the new culture. Adopts and adapts some of the new culture but also keeps some of the old culture. (Promotes multiculturalism- aspects of different cultures in one society)** **Assimilation: Coming into a new society. Completely adapting and joining the new society. Forgetting cultures and traditions from heritage. (Could hurt diversity and diverse ideas)** **Syncretism: Two different cultures come together to form a new culture. A new identity is formed.** **Cultural Resistance: Resistance to whatever is new. Get rid of or demonize new culture.** **[Section 2]: How do cultures spread?** Research and provide a definition for the word below. Then, provide a historic, and a modern example. **Diffusion:** **[Section 3]: How do cultures change over time?** Define modernization theory using the linked [[article]](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/B9780081022955101076). **Cultural Modernization Theory:** Read the following [[article]](https://gilescrouch.medium.com/how-culture-changes-technologies-2d01fd5e3238) and explain how culture and technology affect each other. **[Theories of Change -- Psychology]** **[Contributing factors that bring about social change]** *Watch the following [[video]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anhpgF_jdzQ&t=200s) and provide a definition and example for each term.* **Minority Influence: One person or a small group of people persuade others to adopt their believes, values or behaviours.** **Drawing Attention: Minorities can bring about social change by drawing attention to an issue. This is the first of 6 key elements that bring about social change. Bended knee- Colin Kapernik- drew media attention.** **Cognitive Conflict: The minority creates a conflict between what the majority currently believe and the position of the minority. Makes the majority think more deeply about the issue. Colin Kapernik (bended knee- Trump publicly criticised saying that anyone who bends a knee should be fired.** **Consistency: 3 elements (commitment, flexibility and consistency). All the people in te minority group hold the same beliefs over time. Creating uncertainty in the minds of the majority. Bending the knee continued to happen and still does today to draw attention to police violence and brutality.** **Augmentation Principle: If a minority is willing to suffer for their views, they are seen as more committed and so are to be taken seriously by others. Colin Kapernik lost his job and was never hired by another football team- received numerous death threats.** **Snowball Effect: Small effect at first and then spreads until it reaches a tipping point at which stage it leads to a wide-scale social change. BLM- global** **Social Cryptomnesia: People have a memory that change has occurred but don't remember why it happened. BLM- we are not there yet.**
