# Nervous System ## Tissue Types - Epithelial - Connective - Muscles - Neural (Nervous) ## Neural Tissue - Found in the brain, spinal cord & peripheral nerves. - Peripheral nerves are located outside of the brain & spinal cord. ## Nerve - Bundled up Axon - Neuron cell body is in the brain & spinal cord. ## Ganglion - Group of neuron cell bodies outside brain & spinal cord ## Human brain & Spinal cord - Contains around 100 billion neurons. - These neurons are supported by cells called neuroglia, which is times more than the number of neurons. ## Types of Neurons - Multipolar (found in brain & spinal cord) - Bipolar (found in retina, internal ear, smell [roof of skin] - Pseudounipolar neurons (found in the skin.) ## Myelin Sheath - The signal begins in the axon bete hillock - The importance of the node of Ranvier - the signal jumps from 1 node of Ranvier, this helps increase the speed of conduction of the signal. ## Nervous System - The nervous system is made of neural tissue. - We divide the nervous system based on their location: Peripheral Nervous System & Central Nervous System. ## Somatic - You have control (voluntary) ## Autonomic - You don't have control (involuntary) ## Neural Tissues - Have two types of tissues: - Neuron - Neuroglial (glial cell) - Supporting ## Receptors - There are two types of receptors that the nervous system handles. - General sensation is located everywhere in your body such as touch, pain, hot, cold, vibration. - Special sensation are located at a specific place in your body, such as vision (eyes), hearing (ears), smell (nose), taste (mouth).
