37 Chapter 4 EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY FOR EXTENSION The mind is its own place, and in itself can make aheaven of hell, a hell of heaven.'-John Milton Psychology' is derived from two Greek words, Psyche' and Logos'. Psyche means 'soul, and Logos' means 'science'. Thus psychology was first defined as the 'Science of the Soul. Later psychology was understood as the 'Science of Mind' and Science of Consciousness'. However, soul,mind and consciousness are something metaphysical. It cannot be seen, observed and touched, and we cannot do scientific experiments on it. So modem psychologists defined psychology as the 'Science of Behaviour'. Behaviour generally means overt activities which can be observed and measured scientifically. The experience of the individual always influences the behaviour. So when we study one's behaviour, we must also study his experiences. That is why Skinner has defined psychology as a science of behaviour and experiences on human beings. According to Crow and Crow, psychology is the study of human behaviour and human relationship. Educational Psychology Educational psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the scientific in an educational study of human learning. It is the scientific study of human behaviour setting. Here we apply the findings of psychology to the field of education. It involves outcomes,the instructional studying how people learn, including topics such as student learning disabilities. process, individual differences in learning, gifted learners, and Educational psychology is concerned primarily with understanding the processes helps in developing ways of teaching and learning within formal environments.
