Trials of Jesus: Sanhedrin Council Matthew 26:57-67 Terms: Blasphemy - Lying against God To put yourself on the same level as God Jesus had three trials before His death. His first trial took place at the home of Caiaphas, the High Priest on the night He was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. All the members of the Sanhedrin Council were gathered at Caiaphas’ house to question Jesus. During the trial the Council set up many false witnesses against Jesus. However, none of their testimony matched. The witnesses accused Jesus of 1. saying He would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. The Council asked Jesus if this was true. However, He did not respond. 1. claiming to be the Messiah. When Jesus told them that He was the Messiah the Council accused Him of blasphemy and said He deserved the death penalty. However, they did not have the power to impose a death sentence on Him. Instead they: o blindfolded Him o beat Him o spit on Him o mocked (made fun of) Him o slapped Him Through everything that was going on Jesus did not get angry or fight back. This is a good lesson for us when we are taken advantage of or falsely accused. Instead of fighting back sometimes it is good to pray for our enemies and leave them in the hands of God. Assignment: The right to a fair trial is a cornerstone of democratic societies. How a person is treated when accused of a crime provides a concrete demonstration of how far a state respects human rights. Use Human Rights Declaration Article 10 and your knowledge of Jesus’ trial to decide if Jesus was given a fair trial by the Sanhedrin Council. Your response should include references to the story and Article 10. Trials of Jesus: Pilate Matthew 27:1-2 &Luke 23:1-7
