BLOOD PHYSIOLOGY: OVERVIEW Oluwadare Ogunlade 1 14 January 2025 Learning Objectives The students should be able to; 1. Describe blood; its characteristics and components. 2. Highlight the functions of blood. 3. Discuss the structure and functions of the red blood cells. 4. Discuss the functions of the white blood cells. 5. Describe the structure and function of platelets 6. Describe the composition and functions of the plasma 2 14 January, 2025 What is Blood? Blood is a tissue consisting of formed elements and plasma. It is a fluid connective tissue located within the cardiovascular system(heart and blood vessels) It is 7-8% of total body weight. An average-sized woman has about 9 pints of blood in her body, and an average-sized man has about 12 pints. 3 14 January, 2025 Characteristics of Blood Variable Properties Colour Arterial Blood Bright Red Venous Blood Dark red Volume Adult Female 4-5L Adult Male 5-6L Temperature ≈38°C (100.4°F) PH Arterial Blood 7.40(7.35-7.45) Venous Blood 7.36(7.31-7.41) Viscosity 3.5 times denser than water 4 14 January, 2025 Functions of Blood Transportation Immunity Haemostasis Homeostasis Blood pressure maintenance Hydraulic function 5 14 January, 2025 Components of Blood The blood is made up of liquid and solid phases: The liquid phase (55%) is the plasma The solid phase(45%) consists of the formed elements(cells and cellular fragments) 6 14 January, 2025 Estimated Percentage Composition of Blood 7 14 January, 2025 Cells and Cell Fragments Red blood cells(erythrocytes)- 98-99% White blood cells (leucocytes)-
