He was killed and Mir Jafar was made the new Nawab of Bengal. ## Mir Jafar: A Puppet Ruler * Mir Jafar was a puppet ruler in the hands of the British. * He failed to meet the Company's demands and was deposed in 1760. ## Mir Qasim: A Short Reign * Mir Qasim, Mir Jafar's son-in-law, became the new Nawab of Bengal. * He attempted to free himself from British influence, but this angered the Company. * He dismissed officials who favored the British, hired European experts to train his army and abolished all duties on internal trade. * This led to the Battle of Buxar in 1764. ## The Battle of Buxar (1764) * Mir Qasim was defeated by the British in 1763. He fled to Awadh and entered into an alliance with the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daulah and the Mughal Emperor, Shah Alam.
