# Anatomy of the Appendix The appendix is a direct continuation of the cecum. It is located at the confluence of three longitudinal bands (teni). Its length varies in a very wide range. On average, it is 7-10 cm. In most cases, the appendix has a mesentery—a duplicate of the peritoneum. The mesentery contains the nerves and the appendicular artery. The image shows a diagram of the human digestive system, with the appendix highlighted in blue and labelled. The large intestine and small intestine are also labelled.
