The salesman took out some saris of different colours. Dhruv's mother felt their texture with her hand and shook her head. "These are not silk saris," she said firmly. "I want saris made of pure silk." Dhruv wondered how his mother knew that the saris she felt were not silk saris. Can you take a guess? Which material do you think the saris were made of? Discuss in class. ### History of Clothing During the Stone Age, the early humans covered their body with big leaves or bark of trees and animal skin or fur to keep themselves warm. Clothing at that time were simply draped or tied. Later on, with better tools, they learnt to punch holes in animal skin and lace two pieces together. In ancient Egypt, people cultivated cotton and flax near the river Nile. In India, people grew cotton near the river Ganga. The cotton grown was used to make cotton fabric. They used to wear unstitched cloths because stitching was not known to them. ### Did You Know? Over 5,000 years old, the Tarkhan Dress discovered in Egypt is the oldest woven garment ever found in the world. ### Fibres and Their Types Observe the edges of a torn piece of cloth. You will see some loose threads sticking out from the edge of the tear. Pull out one thread. Hold it at one end and scratch the other end with your nails. You will find that the thread splits into thinner strands. These thinner strands are ### We wear clothes to protect ourselves from sunlight, dust, heat, rain, cold and insect bites. All around the world, people wear different types of clothes depending on the climate of the place they live in. For example, in our country, people living in Kerala wear light cotton clothes which are suitable for humid weather. People living in Kashmir wear thick woolen clothes to keep themselves warm in the cold weather. ### With the invention of the sewing needle, people started stitching to make different types of clothes. Stitched clothes began to be used in India around the 14th century. Unstitched fabrics in the form of sari, dhoti, lungi and turban are used even today.
