# Mometrix ## Concerns about sexual identity, negative self-image - Depression, lack of close friends, fighting or violent episodes - Poor academic progress with truancy and failure to complete assignments - Lack of impulse control - Obesity ## 15-17 years: In middle adolescence, ages 15-17, most body changes have occurred, and there is less concern about this but more concern about the image the adolescents are projecting to others. Girls may worry about weight and boys about muscle development. Teenagers are interested in sexuality and many begin sexual experimentation. There is strong identification with peer groups, including codes of dress and behavior, often putting them at odds with family. Developmental concerns include: * Spinal curvature (females) * Short stature (males) * Lack of testicular maturation/persistent gynecomastia * Acne. Anorexia or obesity * Sexual experimentation, multiple partners, and unprotected sex * Sexual identification concerns * Depression, poor self-image, lack of peer group identification * Lack of adequate exercise * Poor nutrition. Poor dental health * Chronic diseases * Experimentation with drugs and alcohol * Problems with authority figures * Gang association * Poor academic progress, failing classes, truancy, attention deficits and disruptive class behavior * Poor judgment and impulse control ## 18-21 years: Late adolescence, 18-21, is the time when adolescents begin to take on more adult roles and responsibilities, entering the world of work or going to college. Most have come to terms with their sexuality and have a more mature understanding of people's motivations. Some young people will continue to engage in high-risk behaviors. Many of the problems associated with middle adolescence may continue if unresolved, interfering with the transition to adulthood. Developmental concerns include: * Failure to take on adult roles, no life goals or future plans * Low self-esteem * Lack of intimate relationships * Sexual identification concerns * Gang association * Continued identification with peer group or dependence on parents * High-risk sexual behavior, multiple partners and unprotected sex * Depression * Poor academic progress or ability
