# Communication Skills ## Unit Outcomes After completion of this chapter, the students will be able to: - Enumerate and discuss various types of communication. - Use verbal communication skills to interact with patients or professionals. - Use written communication techniques effectively. - Apply body language techniques for effective communication. - Conduct patient interviews effectively. ## Introduction to Communication Skills It is not enough for pharmacists to simply provide medication but he is also required to participate in the activities that enhances patient adherence and helps patient in the wise use of medication. Using effective communication skill is essential in the provision of patient care. The communication skills can facilitate formation of trusting relationships with patients. An effective communication process can ensure that patients will make informed decisions, use medications appropriately, and ultimately, meet therapeutic goals. Communication is an art and everyone communicates in their own communications style. So, lots of variations exist in effective communications. What is most important is that one should communicate in a sincere and honest manner with another, in a style which is most comfortable. We should note that 70% of our daily waking time is spent communicating, out of which we spend approximately 16% reading, 9% writing, 30% talking, and 45% listening. If communications are unclear, they can lead to confusing interpretations. So, there is need for clarity when communicating. ## Definition Communication is defined as the two-way process of exchanging ideas, thoughts or simply the transmission of information from one person to another. ## Elements of Communication The communication model includes five important elements: sender, message, receiver, feedback, and barriers.
