## CHEMISTRY **Peer Exam: 75-10/23** ### 1. Ionic Bonding - The best ionic bonding is a strong force of attraction between oppositely changed ions. - This includes transfer of electrons from one atom to another. - An example could be Sodium Chloride or Magnesium Oxide (they contain a Metal & a non-Metal) ### Transferring Electrons: - When a non-metal (e.g. Chlorine) combines with a metal (e.g. Sodium), the one with a stronger attraction for electrons will take an electron from the other. - When something gains electrons, it becomes negative. - When something loses electrons, it becomes positive. **Diagram:** - A circle with 11 protons and 11 electrons is labelled "Na." Another circle with 17 protons and 18 electrons is labelled "Cl." - An arrow points from the Na atom to the Cl atom with the label "lost electrons." - The Na diagram shows 3 shells of electrons and the label, "Period 3."
