## Bones of the Skull ### Cranial Bones * Frontal Bone * Parietal Bone * Temporal Bone * Occipital Bone * Sphenoid Bone * Ethmoid Bone ### Facial Bones * Nasal Bone * Lacrimal Bone * Zygomatic Bone * Maxilla * Palatine Bone * Vomer * Inferior Nasal Conchae * Mandible ### Skull Features * **Coronal suture** connects the frontal bone to the parietals. * **Sphenoid bone** articulates with the frontal, parietal and temporal bones. * **Pterion** where the frontal, parietal, sphenoid and temporal bones meet. * **Zygomatic arch** made up of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygomatic bone. * **Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)** connects the temporal and mandible. * **Squamous suture** connects the squamous part of the temporal bone to the parietal bone. * **Tympanic part of the temporal bone** surrounds the external acoustic meatus. * **External acoustic meatus** passageway for sound from the external ear. * **Mastoid process** attachment site for the sternocleidomastoid muscle. * **Styloid process** points projection of bone which serves as attachment for hyoid and tongue muscles. * **Sagittal Section** shows the cranial cavity formed by the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, ethmoid and sphenoid bones. * **Frontal sinus** space within the frontal bone. * **Sphenoidal sinus** open space within the sphenoid bone. * **Perpendicular plate of ethmoid** forms the posterosuperior portion of the nasal septum. * **Vomer** forms the posteroinferior portion of the nasal septum. * **Palatine process of the maxillae and the palatine bones** form the hard palate. * **Hard palate** forms the floor of the nasal cavity and the roof of the mouth. * **Inferior/Basal View** reveals the hard palate, medial and lateral pterygoid plates of the sphenoid bone, internal openings of the nasal cavity (choanae), mandibular fossa and pterygoid processes. * **Jugular foramen** an opening between the temporal and occipital bones for passage of the internal jugular vein and nerves. * **Foramen lacerum** between the occipital and temporal bones. * **Carotid canal** passage for the internal carotid artery. * **Stylomastoid foramen** between the mastoid process and the styloid process. * **Foramen magnum** largest foramen of the skull for passage of the spinal cord. * **Occipital condyles** rounded projections on either side of the foramen magnum which articulate with the first cervical vertebra. * **Hypoglossal canal** passageway for the hypoglossal nerve.
