# Rights and Duties of a Roman Citizen The following table describes the rights and duties of a Roman citizen. | Rights | Duties | |---|---| | Possessing land | Participating in censuses | | Voting | Serving in the military | | Being elected as a magistrate | Paying taxes | | Pursuing someone in court | | | Being tried in court | | | Marrying a fellow citizen's daughter | | **Additional Information:** A Roman citizen could earn citizenship if they served 25 years in the Roman army and the city the citizen resided in supported Rome during wartime. All residents of that city could be granted citizenship. A citizen could also request citizenship from an emperor if deemed loyal to him.
