# Mometrix ## Roundworms * Roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides) grow 6-13 inches and can cause serious damage. * A child may have up to 100 worms. * Symptoms include: * Malnutrition * Abdominal discomfort. * Passing worms in stool or emesis. * Treatment includes: * Albendazole (Albenza®) 400mg orally in a single dose (drug of choice). Must be taken with fatty foods. * Mebendazole (Vermox®) 500 mg orally in one dose OR 100 mg orally twice daily for 3 days. * Ivesrmectin 150-200 mcg/kg p.o. once. * Risk factors include: * Young age * Going barefoot * Poor sanitation of food and water, poor hygiene * Living in or traveling to an endemic area * Immigrant status, especially from Mexico. ## Pinworms * Enterobius vermicularis (pinworms) are tiny (3-13 mm) worms that hatch in the small intestine. * They lay eggs in the perianal folds, causing intense itching. * Symptoms include: * Malnutrition * Abdominal discomfort * Passing worms in stool or emesis. * Treatment includes: * Albendazole (Albenza®) 400mg orally in a single dose (drug of choice). Must be taken with fatty foods. * Mebendazole (Vermox®) 500 mg orally in one dose OR 100 mg orally twice daily for 3 days. * Ivermectin 150-200 mcg/kg p.o. once. ## Hookworms * Necator americanus is common in the United States. * Hookworm can cause serious damage of the small intestine, including malnutrition, but may be fatal. * Symptoms include: * Initial * Later * Treatment includes: * Albendazole * Mebendazole * Pyrantel pamoate * Iron * Note: Stools may be needed. ## Scalp Ringworm (Tinea Capitis) * Tinea capitis can cause serious damage to the scalp through the skin causing fine scaling and hair loss. * Symptoms: * Griseofulvin * Selenium sulfide ## Tinea Corporis * Tinea corporis causes infection to the skin. * Symptoms on other parts of the body appear as raised borders. * Symptoms: * Selenium sulfide * Topical antifungal medication for 4 weeks.
