# Reading and Literature in the 21st Century Reading is an important intellectual activity for humans because it requires comprehension and understanding. ## Why Should Students Read Literature in the 21st Century? * Literature helps us connect with others. * Reading is an act of empathy. * We learn more about ourselves when we read about others. ## What is Considered Literature Today? Technology has expanded our definition of "text" to include: * Movies * Spoken word poetry * Screenplays * Audio books * Text messages * Blogs * Podcasts * Instant messaging * YouTube videos * Pictures * Scripts ## What Literature Should Students be Reading? * **Educators and writers agree that students should be reading "absolutely everything they can get their hands on." ** * **Literature lets us encounter a variety of ideas.** * **Students should be prepared for the incredible things the world will throw at them.** ## 21st Century Literacy * Reading is essential for being able to access information, but it's not enough. * **We need to learn how to discern what information is correct, reliable, meaningful, and/or articulate.** # Chapter 1: Literature: Its Genres and Elements Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. It is derived from the Latin word "litera" which means letters. It commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama fiction, nonfiction, and journalism, and song. ## It is a composition that: * Tells a story. * Dramatizes a situation. * Expresses emotions. * Analyzes and advocates an idea. Literature makes us humans. It covers a wide variety of text so it was divided in four genres: * Prose fiction * Nonfiction prose * Poetry * Drama ## Forms/Genres of Literature * **Prose fiction** is based on the writer’s imagination and it uses imaginary characters, places, or events. It uses sentences and paragraphs to tell the story.
