# The Role of Society and the Individual in the Emergence of Mores **FREEDOM IN THE CONTEXT OF MORALITY** **Definitions:** * **Sanctions:** a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule * **Customs:** a traditional and widely accepted way of behaving or doing something specific to a particular society, place, or time * **Habits:** a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up * **Obnoxious:** extremely unpleasant * **Instinct:** a natural or intuitive way of acting or thinking * **Phenomena:** the object of a person's perception * **Maxim:** a short, pithy statement expressing a general truth or rule of conduct * **Summum Bonum:** the highest good, especially as the ultimate goal according to which values and priorities are established in an ethical system * **Sentient:** able to perceive or feel things * **Value-laden:** pre-supposing the acceptance of a particular set of values * **Casual:** relating to or acting as a cause **Folkways:** * The notion of 'right' and 'true' * Catching a game * Treating guests * Dressing up **Descriptions of Practices** * These practices have been considered the most practical way to do things.
